It's been many months since my last anxiety panic but I had one in this room today. After school - on my own - this massive wave hit me and the only way to come down was to rest my head on my desk and breathe through it. I spent some time looking at this wall as the panic slowly subsided and after a while of staring, I realized I felt safe in this room. This is artwork my students have worked on with me or that they brought to hang up. I felt safe to have my moment in that room because of the love being poured into it. These walls were nearly blank when the year began and it's evolved into this beauty. Today, we would like to take time and thank the many Mentors we have in our lives. Jay Nunez, our founder and main contributor will share the most influential Mentors of his life. Comment and tag your Mentors to give them a thank you today for all that they have taught you. Don't forget to follow us like and share. First, I would like to thank my father Jay Nunez Sr.. This man has showed me hard work and how to be an early bird. My father would wake me up bright and early on the weekends and school vacation to go work with him as a carpenter apprentice. First, he had me carry the tool box and passing him tools and as I got older he would give me more responsibility and my confidence grew. Then I have my older brother Luis R. my brother and I share a special gene in our DNA sequence. That gene we share is the entrepreneur gene. Over the years I saw my brother start many ventures in the entertainment industry, sports and community development. Like all of us entrepreneurs know, 9 out of 10 businesses fail. So people like my brother and I pick ourselves up and keep moving forward with another crazy idea. Third on this list is a man named Jose A. who I met back in 2006 when one of my businesses went belly up. Jose gave me a chance to work at one of the biggest financial firms in New York City. He saw something in me and helped move me up the ranks quickly. In three short years, with his guidance and support I went from an entry-level position to a supervisory one in my department. Second to last on this list is Mr. Elvin B with his famous quote “Give out a helping hand and hope that one day if your kids are in the same situation someone will help them.” We spent hours in his office talking about many parts of life and I appreciate the time he spent with me today on this day. Last but not least we have a three way tie. My wife Ivy and two boys Liam and Noah. They are my Happy Song. Everyday is a blessing to have them in my life. When a parent goes to prison, their children are serving the time with them.

Today my mentee, T.J., told me that in April his father is "finally coming home." After 10 years, his father will be released from prison. T.J. said that this will be the first year that he will be able to remember spending a birthday with his dad.

10 years. 10. Years. 10 years of driving hundreds of miles once every two months just to see the face of his father. 10 years of being told that he is only allowed to embrace his father twice per visit. 10 years of telling his friends and teachers that his father was deployed, or in college, or "away."

10 years of little league games and basketball games and football games without his father cheering from the sideline. 10 years of phone calls cut short due to insufficient funds. 10 years of memories that T.J. could have been building with his father, if it weren't for the bars built between them.

So when I say that children are "doing time" with their incarcerated parents, what I'm really saying is that prison doesn't just exist as a jail cell.
