Imagine a RED mer!Scout. His bright coloration indicates that he is poisonous, so predators stay away from him.
As a consequence, though, his body fluids have a slight hallucinogenic effect on humans. So whenever he makes out with his partner, they get a little trippy... and if their partner accidentally "swallows", they get VERY trippy.
