Him gliding on the water's surface, scanning below for a mending book and diving the second something glittery catches his eyes, only to come back empty handed or worse: with trash/fish

Continuing my journey of making fanart for friends’ fics the first fic in the Chasing the Horizon Line series has made it’s way here.

I have to say this piece was a challenge getting the colors and shading correct as well as making sure the perspectives were all correct with wanting to showcase both the horizon and surface as well as underwater. But in the end it was great fun. While I’m not proud of everything in this piece, I’m still happy how it turned out!

A torn tail fluke on a mer. 

In the open ocean this could make for a near death sentence. 

But for pond and shallow water mers, it’s just annoying. Think of a sprained ankle in human terms.  

And when Grian tore his tail. It was bad. 

Confined to the pond in his home, to circulate antibiotics in the water to protect the delicate tissue. Any friction on the fluke risks ripping it open again. So he’s not supposed to swim anywhere just yet.

If someone agrees to help him swim he can move to the main pools.

Have you ever heard of the flying fish? It's a fish that can jump out of the water and glide. And apart from his well-known penchant for flying, Grian was also associated with fish a few times, between all the cod jokes and the salmon ghost. I think you know what I'm trying to say here.

He has long pelvic fins that attach to his arms and extend like wings. They work like a harpy's wings.

While in mer form, he loves to sun himself near the surface of the water.

He's also attracted to light, a bit like a moth...
