now, my grasp on rain world lore is not the greatest, but i do my best o7

ancients are amphibious, preferring having access to deep water but sleeping and eating on land. the void sea can be seen as a way of shedding their ties to the land, where these sins are often indulged in. (people do the same shit in the water. this is purely cultural.)

iterators are built high to keep the water pure in their systems, preventing water seeping in. easier to flush, easier to maintain purity of water. the puppet is designed to live in the same fluid that the rest of the systems are drenched in, only separated to keep the systems working well. (you don't want to dump your brain in your lungs)

data visualization and projection in the water using conductive particulates clumping together to create form.

IN GENERAL, older iterators are equipped with secondary legs (like NSH above!) to allow for a temporary draining in the case that more ancients wanted to enter and converse. this became irrelevant over time, and did not stick around long. the puppets embrace the ideals of soaking in knowledge.
