ELI5: Mercenary King’s Intro
So I made this bunch of rectangles and then the Pixel Fairy gave them life. Then the Word Fairy added a bunch of words to it and a Code Fairy stuffed all of it inside the belly of the game with the Music Fairy’s work and then *DJANG!* It twinkled.
These are my color studies for the full intro initially planned for Mercenary Kings. We had to cut a few scenes here and there for time reasons and so the whole thing would sync better to the excellent music of Patrice Bourgeault.
Here’s what you missed:
You were to discover the Baron himself was piloting the exo-suit that killed you and your friends, making it somewhat more personal later in the game. There was a nice quarrel between the Colonel and the Baron hinting at previous confrontations and there was a montage sequence of King and Empress’ reconstruction, showing how the Colonel and Dr. Bluebell worked desperately to save your lives, making you half-humans half-machines in the process.
Overall most of it made it through and the added in-game bits really tied it to the game, so all for the better!
Last one! As the game’s story evolved, we realized the mandrakes weren't part of the bad guys after all. They’re just trying to protect the island and it’s natural inhabitants by fighting back humans in general. Thought they seem to be in a pretty tight spot right now :S
Again, such a vast and complex environment and I realize just now posting this that I've failed my goal of showcasing everything! I forgot the acid pools, what a bummer!!
So many things I wanted to include! The Dam levels have both huge interiors and exteriors, all full of details; It was really tricky to include everything.
