Agnostic woman of science!Liz & agnostic alien healer priest!Max AU. Because we can.
love the very blood of you by @mercenarywitch (ao3 link):
Rosa relapses on a Monday, but Liz doesn't find out her sister has been popping pills until she finds her in their shared apartment Wednesday night. She overdosed.
The 911 call is frantic. Panic wracks through her words, a sob of 'hurry' trembles through the line. The red and blue flash of ambulance lights, the siren, the shrill announcement of what has happened is a wake up call to the street. Liz barely hears the whispers and the concerned murmurs; her sister is being led out on a stretcher.
There is no room for Liz in the ambulance. One of the EMTs slows down long enough to tell her which hospital they're going to. Her tone is bland, professional, she has seen enough crying family members to place a wall between herself and them. Liz wishes she could erect her own walls. She believed...maybe this time...but Rosa...this is her second relapse and her third overdose.
Liz drives to the hospital with shaky hands and thinks, this will teach me to have faith when I know better.
---
The doctors stabilize Rosa. Liz chooses not to call their father. She will keep the peace of this night for him; she'll carry the burden of a shattered hope.
A nurse with a five o'clock shadow and a cross necklace informs her the chapel is on the third floor if she'd like to pray. It's meant to be a kindness, but it doesn't feel kind. It feels like an assumption. Liz doesn't know how to respond, but it doesn't matter. The nurse's attention turns away from her, his smile twists out of its sympathy and grows wide in delight.
"Father Evans," he says, sitting up straighter. "What are you doing here this late?"
Liz feels a presence behind her, but she only turns when the man steps to her side. He is tall, his black clothing a stark contrast in the white hospital lighting, and he is handsome. Handsome and young.
"Luisa Mayberry," he says, voice like the rumble of thunder.
The nurse's smile drops. "She hasn't been doing well."
"So I've heard."
"Are you here to," he trails off, glancing at Liz and then back to Father Evans.
Father Evans looks at her, too, from the corner of his eye. Liz swears she hears his breath catch, but then he's nodding at the nurse and telling him he'll see what he can do before heading down the hallway. A patch of black surrounded by white.
Curious, Liz turns to ask the nurse about the father, but he's gone.
mercenarywitch reblogged your post and added: “I’m trying to make gifs off 111 of RNM but I can’t get passed it. I’m...”
No one let’s another person slip something into...
I phrased that badly (the letting part) and I apologize. .I did not mean to offend or cause anyone discomfort.
I’m still not sold, though, on Maria being a smart woman in a time where its unfortunately common for threats like drugs slipped into women’s drinks to not be aware of hers. It’s not her job to keep men from trying things like this but sadly, we need to just the same.
You are right its a big leap from cheating to date rape (or serial killer).
As for hanging around racists and etc like that, she’s in her own bar with people she knows, bouncers and bartenders who work for her. She’s in a safe place and yes, a UFO Emporium should be a safe place but being a public place that she has no control over whose able to enter (the locals only comment comes to mind as I think about this), I believe she’d still be careful, no matter how much she shouldn’t have to be.
I don’t know but thank you for sharing your opinion and pointing out the insensitivity of my wording!
Losing My Religion is still a WIP but I’m proud of it so far. The only thing I’ve actually completed have been one shots, and my favourite one shot is Crash Into Me
3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year
It may just be because this is fresh in my memory but I really like this paragraph from Wide Open Spaces:
Liz laughs, shaking her hair out over her shoulders. The light catches it, despite how dark it is, painting burnished highlights through its lengths, and his heart skips a beat. He’s always fascinated by the effect light has on her. Right now she’s shades of honey and cream, bronze and amber. She’s framed by the desert and seems an elemental part of it too, the way her skin and eyes match its vivid, varied tones. Even the march of freckles across her nose looks like a sweep of sand and dust. But sometimes at night, in darkness, she is a study in contrasts, a perfect chiaroscuro. All the rich colours bleached away into black and white, and the glitter in her eyes.
It’s kind of purple prosey but it’s from Max’s POV and so I think it works–when it comes to Liz, Max is always going to go overboard on trying to describe her and trying to capture how she makes him feel.
24. favorite fic you read this year
This is hard because I haven’t actually read much fic this year–and that’s largely because there’s such a dearth of Echo. While the show was airing I kept enthusiastically diving into the tag on AO3 and then realising if I wanted it, I was going to have to write it myself. I know @angsty-nerd is working on a WIP as well but she’s largely updating while I’m trying to focus on my studies, so I’m saving that as a treat for when I’ve submitted this final essay.
Hmm. Let me check my bookmarks and my kudos.
Oh right! @circular-8 fed us with a fic that was simultaneously filthy and sweet in the form of Truly Madly Deeply. That. That was my favourite thing this year. Though I have enjoyed reading so many character studies and speculative AUs this year, especially when it comes to some of the more neglected characters.
@mercenarywitch replied to your photoset “itslizortecho: Rest in Peace, Roswell are you afraid of the dark?...”
@craashdowns *eyes emoji* a sleepy hollow au you say!
Sleepy Hollow au I say!!! Liz as a deep-in-denial skeptic until she’s forced to face facts, Max as a soft boy intellectual DORK with a righteous spirit, Rosa considered ~crazy and difficult~ but more knowledgeable than the witnesses. It’s a thing that should be a Thing!
mercenarywitch replied to your post “I love how Nathan towers over Jeanine in that gif you just posted. I...”
Liz making coffee in a bathrobe with her hair on top of her head and a tired smile as she looks at Max over the rim of her mug.
Max with mushed hair, rubbing sleep out of his eyes as he drags into the kitchen. His sleep pants hanging low and his sleep shirt rucked up a bit. He returns her tired smile and gets to making breakfast.
They eat on the couch cross legged. There’s a plate waiting on the counter for Rosa who wakes up half an hour later. She’s got a pillow print on her cheek. Her hair is in a loose, messy braid. She half waves at them and grunts a hello before warming her plate, grabbing her coffee, and mumbling that she’ll see them in an hour when the sun doesn’t feel like death.
Liz looks at Max and says, “She was a vampire in another life.” And Max laughs so hard he falls into the pillows on the couch.
!!! This shouldn’t be hidden in notes, Witch! Does Liz wipe a spot of jam from his mouth? Does Max handprint-kiss Liz’s burns from spitting bacon fat better?! Does Liz obnoxiously stretch out on the couch and push her feet all over his chest?? Max brushing the tangles out of LIz’s slept-on hair??? YASSSS.
I asked her if she’d be down to write a drabble for my gifset and she immediately said yes. Then she started spiralling, I started spiralling, we both started spiralling in DMs. Somehow it turned into a full 13k fic. She really went above and beyond for this AU idea and we are all blessed for it 👀
This was basically a culmination of us yelling at each for months about how “Echo is a religion for both Liz/Max”. Witch dropped some of my fave lines about the Echo ship during NYCC: “‘What if God were one of us’? What if God were both of us?”
Over time this turned into yelling at each other about religious Echo AUs and here we are 😂
