Ole Miss Rebels for sure did not show mercy on the Mercer Bears in college football's opening day yesterday.

Congrats to Bob Hoffman on his 500th win. After a tough game against VMI the Mercer Basketball team pulled away with a 62 -56 win. For the Bears it makes for there third win in a row. Bob Hoffman has had some great moments along his coaching career. In 1989 he led the woman's Southern Nazararena to a National title. Bob has coached as high as the d league for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in 2007-2008. In 2013,14 he was coach of the year in the A-Sun.He also led the Mercer 🐻 to A- Sun championship. The one no one will ever forget when his 14th seed Mercer Bears beat 3rd seed Duke in the dance. Congrats again to Bob Hoffman on #500
Bob Hoffman coach of the Mercer Bears have seen the ups and downs of being in a one bid league. He has done a great job this year getting his team hot at the right time of year. After a slow start to the season the Mercer Bears are starting to Gel. It's great to have guys who can make plays, and who you trust," Hoffman said. "We'll continue to figure out what we should do, when and where, but you're never a finished product until you get to the end. Mercer Bears are back in action tomorrow night against VMI keydets.
Realignment Grades: Mercer Bears
I got my first ever fan mail which was super exciting. A fan wanted me to give Mercer's 2013 football team a little shoutout for their great season. The Bears went 10-2 in their first season playing football since 1941. They held the best overall record in the Pioneer Football League which included an undefeated 8-0 record at home.
This post will also help me kick off a new series that I will be running in earnest once I finish the conference rankings that I've been working on. I want to grade how schools changing their conference allegiances are turning out.
Mercer University is an all sports member of the Atlantic Sun Conference and a football only member of the Pioneer Football League. The Bears will move to the Southern Conference on July 1st in all sports, this includes giving football players scholarships, which were not allowed in the PFL. The move will bring Mercer in competition with some of the best FCS teams in the South in one of the most preeminent football conferences in their level. Going from having no football team in 2012 to the Southern Conference in 2014 grabs Mercer an A+ in their realignment move. It's just a shame that Georgia Southern is leaving the league at the same time, that could have been quite a series.
Our Bears deserve all of our support
Our men's basketball team will be returning this afternoon from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm. They will be in the UC parking lot so everyone needs to go out there, signs in hand, Mercer spirit displayed proudly, to show them that we support them through thick and thin.
The team has SEVEN seniors and they just played their last Mercer game and deserve the greatest "Thank you" ever for these past four years. So here's to you Jakob Gollon, Daniel Coursey, Monty Brown, Anthony White Jr, Kevin Canevari, Langston Hall, and Bud Thomas. Thanks for the ride, boys. We love you.
