top 5 metal gear moments?
ok this is a good one. in no order:
1. solid snake vs. frank jaeger in metal gear 2: solid snake. i love both of them a lot. "i dreamed of the day i could settle with you!" ok, homo.
2. Meryl telling snake off in mgs4 when he's doing his little face camo thing. which she thinks is pathetic.
3. Dr. Strangelove's briefing files for the peacewalker project. 🥺
4. Vamp's introduction in MGS2. i like the parallels w gray fox's intro in 1. the bloody hallway, Snake being obviously physically overmatched. hits very hard and gray fox's mgs1 intro gets honorable mention because otacon pees himself and gray fox is cool.
5. the end of metal gear 2. when snake leaves Holly after promising to go to Christmas dinner with her. i think that along w his reason for not going back to the Fox Unit ("the nightmares have stopped. im a free man.") sets up the foundation for the character arch he takes between MGS1 and 4. it's also canon where we leave off before seeing him in mgs1? which i think is interesting.
in mg2 he's our quintessential action hero. young, attractive, stoic, and extraordinary. in mgs1 he's most of those things but not really. he's older, like at the closing of his window on movie star believability, obviously traumatized, he's stoic for the most part except he puts his foot in his mouth around meryl and overall comes of as a dumb old man around her. but he's still selfish. by mgs4 we see him fighting for a cause everyone else has already counted him out of, expressly for the sake of doing it instead of others. ppl who might still have a chance to live happily. he does the whole reactor hallway thing and it's all very "not for honor, but for you". and i don't think that moment means anything if he was always that guy. and the end of mg2 gives us the foundation to get there.
