Sweat trickled down Eva’s back as she there jabs and kicks at the punching bag in front of her. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, revealing bat ears that twitched as the young woman made a series of clicks that helped her reposition herself. Spread around her feet were a handful of weights and rope forming a border so Eva wouldn’t wander away from her spot and risk having someone snatch it before she was done.
The bag gave way to the force of her attacks causing a satisfied grin to curl Eva’s lips. She loved the way her muscles tensed and relaxed, found purchase on their target, left her panting with the exertion. When she was a child, this punching bag didn’t so much as sway with her tiny fist. She could barely lift a five pound weight without wanting to cry from frustration. Now, though, it was so easy. She had improved so much and Eva was glad for it. Maybe she’d even join tonight’s fighter’s event. She had extra coin for it.
Eva stepped away from the bag after finishing her set, reaching for a canister of water that lay at the end of the rope she splayed out earlier. She paused from taking a sip as an unpleasant smell overtook her olfactory. Her ears twitched from the sound of heavy footfalls—three people, two men and a woman. “Can I help you?” She asked politely enough, but her voice was full of challenge. She could hear a scoff from one of them. “Yeah, you can get outta here. We’re taking this spot.”
Now it was Eva’s turn to laugh. “Yeah, I don’t think so. I was here first.” The woman spoke. “Are you deaf? We said scram, low ranker. Ya know the rules. High Rankers get priority.” Eva laughed harder. “You’re kidding, right? I’m not deaf, but in case you’re hard of seeing, I’m blind. For all I know, you could be Low Rankers like me. Either prove it or beat it.”
As Eva dropped her canister and went to return to her drills when a hand gripped her hair and yanked her back. “Hey!” Oh, it is ON. She started to fight back.
