sam couldn’t remember the last time the girls had a sleepover, but she felt like laura needed some girl time or whatever. they watched an entire season of friends, ate delivered pizza ( that sam wasn’t going to tell her papino about ) and ended up passing out in sam’s bed. it almost felt normal, but there was still a dark cloud hanging over their heads with everything that happened to and around them.
the problem with a sleepover was that sam didn’t really sleep. not anymore. it started with nightmares after the fight at school, but those started happening less frequently and she started sleeping a little better the closer she got to hawk. maybe it was just feeling like she had a person again, she didn’t know and she didn’t question it. but the moment things started falling apart again, the nightmares started again.
she didn’t tell anyone the first time it happened, and she wasn’t going to tell anyone now. they were just dreams. at least, that’s what she told herself. no trauma, no ptsd, just dreams. it was easier to downplay her mental health than to say it out loud, so she was deep in denial. she was fine. at least, that’s what she would tell anyone that asked. if they asked. but they would have to notice something was wrong first.
after tossing and turning for over an hour, she finally got up from the bed, pulled on a hoodie ( one of eli’s ) and snuck into the kitchen. she poured a glass of milk and was reaching for a pack of oreos when she heard something behind her. she jumped and cursed and turned around to see who was there. “hey—” she said when she saw her, willing her heart to stop racing. “—you couldn’t sleep either?”
