In response to this post, and for @merdesmiroirs, who gave me a rec list after I whinged about not having anything to read. These are the most recent works I have enjoyed for a multitude of reasons. And while I consider you somewhat of a Harrymort encyclopedia, hopefully you haven’t read at least some of these.
A Scattered Dream | XxXxDarkVampirexXxX This is the fic that inspired me to draw Voldemort in a swing. Very edible.
The Rains of Castamere | BelovedShadow Draco does not hesitate to identify the Golden Trio when they are captured and brought to Malfoy Manor. Very deliciously dark, with a huge helping of psychological horror.
yebisu (葛城 ミサト) | slexenskee For the record, Harry was only here for his time-travelling kids. Voldemort can fuck off. A sweet and charming slide into begrudging domesticity.
In Willing Sacrifice | GeMerope One of my favorite Harrymort stories I’ve ever read. My smol child Harry tries to kill Voldemort and befriends him instead. Very cerebral handling of Dark Magic.
Children of the Revolution | AlexisVV Everyone is probably aware of this one. In a world where Sybil Trelawney is never born, the prophecy remains, but goes unheard. How different will Harry Potter's life be, growing up in a world where Voldemort won?
No Glory | ObsidianPen Voldemort wins the war. I loved this so much, it took me two weeks to close the tab after I’d caught up to the latest chapter.
Mind Magic | Snickerdoodlepop The plot’s still brewing in this one, and I’m excited to see where it goes. After figuring out Dumbledore's real plans for Harry Potter, Severus Snape decides that the only way to keep Harry alive is to somehow convince the Dark Lord not to kill him.
merdesmiroirs replied to your post “I have started studying French about a month ago. Initially I was...”
Oh please, German is like a "light mode" version of Russian xD Having to learn both German and French, I prefer German simply because of a better structured pronunciation and grammar whereas French feels much more arbitrary, and gods forbid - the accents, I could never hear the difference ! Congratulations for passing the English exam! And great to hear you are moving forward again! Hopefully feeling better too *hug
Oh I totally get you, and agree, anything compared to German is arbitary, esp French. But I am the oposite of you , I find arbitary and unstructured easier, bc Hungarian is more like that. I am actualy enjoying how the word order is not as fixed than it was in English. Also for me there is no diference in difficulty when it comes to pronunciation, bc Hungarian pronunciation is very straightforward compared to English or French, so for me it is equaly nonsensical. I don’t mean to brag, but I am good at auditory learning too, so I am not afraid of that either. And Thanks friend :D.
On a sidenote: Before the USSR fell, Russian was the mandatory language children had to learn. Despite this going on since my grandmother’s time, it left litle impression on my parents generation. Idk if it was bc of the quality of the education, or lack thereof. or our inability to deal with that language on a national level (or an act of rebellion)

Having utterly enjoyed the portrait series, I would love to see even more of your art, as steady lines and a touch of shading blend into very distinct, different features... Albeit a little older than the boys I have known so far. And so far I adore "The Magicweaver"...
i just saw this. damn, i’m bad at using tumblr lol...
i would show more of my art but alas i am wary of allowing more of it onto this account since my art is very heavily linked to my internet identity...if i post it here and someone recognizes the same piece elsewhere....
i’m paranoid and i wish to keep my fanfiction and art identities wholly separate. but thank you; i’m glad you like it! (and yes they’re a bit older in the portrait series ;D)
In this post here, @merdesmiroirs asked me a question, and I thought I’d better respond in a new post just because tumblr’s reblog system doesn’t seem to give me a way to contribute without majorly clogging everyone’s dashes. This was the best solution I could think of.
And how do you conceive story ideas? Would you share some of your inspirations/headcanons?
So, my inspiration comes from all over the place. More Precious than Rubies, for example, was a complete accident.
As those of you who have been around for awhile know, I’m working on this massive project called Heir’s Champion. Heir’s Champion itself started because of this gifset, which has Tom and Harry going to the Yule Ball. I went “aww, that’s nice, there isn’t a lot of fluff in this pairing. I should write that!” I asked the artist about it and she mentioned that Harry was still in the Tournament and that Tom was one of the few people who had stuck around, because he’d concluded that Harry too much of an idiot to have put his name in himself.
So, I went in with plans to write maybe like 10k, have it just mostly be fluffy. But then I started thinking about how Harry had ended up in tournament and what his and Tom’s relationship had been like Harry’s other years in Hogwarts and 9 months later it is 97k and still not finished.
What does this have to do with Rubies? As part of Heir’s Champion, I wrote:
“You’re like a dragon,” Harry said with a fond, if exasperated sigh. “Hoarding treasure.”
Tom found himself quite pleased and flattered at the comparison. No one had ever put his need to collect trophies in such terms before. It didn’t hurt that it clearly showed that Harry thought of Tom as dangerous and powerful, for all that it was clear Harry felt himself safe with him.
Staring into emerald eyes, he barred his teeth in a vicious grin.
“A dragon. I quite like that. Yes. I am a dragon, and you, my beloved,” Tom said, wrapping his arms tightly around him and pressing a lingering, covetous kiss to his forehead, “you are my most prized jewel.”
And I really loved the idea, and it was kind of percolating in the background, of Tom being a dragon and Harry being the like 100% done with all this bs “damsel” in the tower. And Heir’s Champion had mutated into something really plot heavy and kind of dark in places and I needed a break, so I decided to start writing the dragon fic as a change of pace. So, that’s how Rubies happened.
This is getting longish, so the rest is under a read more.
I too suffer from a condition identical to your own where any time I see really any media the immediate reaction is “How can I make this Tomarry?” as you no doubt have gathered from the general call about the mummy AU (to which your response was super helpful and I will follow up on eventually). I tend to get a little more stuck in certain roles or tropes or patterns. Like, I’ve just always been fascinated by the hero-villain dynamic, so I’m more likely to say close to that. And I just love Tom as a villain. I love it so much. So that’s really hard to resist for me. Your habit of twisting things sounds really interesting and like something I’d love to read, but not really something I could see myself writing. Plot 100% gets thrown out the window in favor of characterization. I tend to see the source material as more of a loose guideline.
So, yeah, for me it could really be anything that sets it off. A picture, a phrase, a song. If anyone is curious, I’d be happy to explain the conception of any of my plot bunnies in this post (if I can remember. I should be able to for most of them). But things that get written are basically the stories I tell myself before bed over and over again.
merdesmiroirs replied to your post “woo just a basic progress update for all of you people cursing me for...”
Given how stagnant the British magical world seems to be, I believe you can very well base it off current day DA. In fact, outside of brooms and bestseller titles and seller generation, I wonder if there is any true difference?
It’s true that the British magical world is comparatively stagnant, but I can’t help but want to expand. The list of shops that are actually named are quite small, if referring to HP Lexicon. There are presumably cafes, restaurants of some kind. I would like to think that there is more to this magical world than the narrow description that JKR gave. I have so many plans to expand upon this world, to build upon the building blocks that JKR left behind.
So many questions can be answered...and I endeavor to. For example... food. Where do house elves get the required materials to get their food? I highly doubt they can just walk into a Muggle market and tell the cashier, “I’d like this ham, please.” Even if we take into account their mysterious magic, their speaking leaves something to be desired. So are there magical food markets? One chain supermarket? Where do people buy furniture? I’m sure that conjurations and transfigurations are not eternal.
For this reason, I cannot believe that there is only Diagon Alley, one street, and Knockturn Alley for shady dealings. And Hogsmeade, the only wizarding town in Britain, is rather small. Even if the British magical population is not very large, there has to be more. The population of Great Britain is 64 million people. Say...one in a thousand people is magical. That means that there are 64,000 magical humans. Taking into account longer lifespans (I’m using 150 here) an average year should host at least 400 students. 2,800 students total in Hogwarts. Playing the numbers game.... if there were to be only 40 students/year, Britain’s magical population would be ridiculously small. In order to appease my own fancies, I need an expanded Diagon Alley. Even if I don’t subscribe to the rather sizeable numbers I just enumerated.
Hence my pitiful requests for witty shop titles and the like. I am probably looking far too much into this but I enjoy thinking through the caveats of a world like this. (I can probably write five times as much just on the subject of muggleborn prejudice as I hypothesize to be in this time and twice as much on my take on the wizarding world’s relative progressiveness - the wizarding world is stagnant but treats women fairly equally).
I am so sorry for this long response aarrgh. But any suggestions? If you’d like to discuss it further, I can either share my Skype or my Line ID ;D
I just wanted to say that I adore your story, as you have this very fine ability of making your characters deep, complex and fairy likeable individuals without going into black-white extremes of any kind. The story is just so nuanced! And sweet! I have been sick-worried about the Dumbledore encounter, yet for naught. I still believe in every word you wrote, in how you write them... I am still in love! I wish your health improves. And, please don't stress yourself about writing.
Aw, thank you so much! I’ve never been a fan of the extreme stories (*cough cough* ridiculous stories where the Dark side is good and the Light side is bad but torture is ok if you’re Dark??? *cough cough*) so it makes me happy to know that I’ve been straddling the grey line well. The nuances are probably there by accident because I’m always thinking ahead really far into the future for no reason. The Dumbledore encounter was exceptionally difficult to write and for that one I have to commend my betas because without them, that scene would have been significantly different.
I stress myself about everything, it’s okay. And I don’t want to be one of those authors that takes a year to update. Little pushes keep me writing.
Also, thank you so much for the ask! It really made me feel better ;D
You got tagged: Once you get this you have to say 5 things you like about yourself publicly, and then send it to ten of your favourite followers (non negotiable) positivism rocks!
I won't be tagging anyone because I feel uncomfortable about it, like I'm forcing people into doing things. But I encourage all my followes to try this, it might be interesting and useful.
So yeah. Things I like about myself. Coming up with five of them is actually kinda hard...
1) I like that I can write well. I do feel insecure sometimes and I need feedback like air, but after eight years of writing fanfiction I can positively say that yes, I like what I write. This is probably the one area in my life where I actually feel rather confident, where I don't feel like a useless piece of trash.
2) I like some things about my appearance. I like my face, I like the line of my waist, I like my shoulders. There are some things I don't like, of course, but I think that I'm more or less good-looking.
3) I like that I can establish good relations with people and make them feel better. This is another area where I'm somewhat good. Not perfect, but good.
4) I like how I experience the books and shows I love. So many emotions, so many thoughts, so many characters to analyze!
5) I like that I can improve with time. That I actually manage to put enough effort into things. This is... relieving.
