“Mrs. Munson! You have a tattoo?”
Chrissy wiped the sweat from her brow, her coaching jacket held loosely in her left hand. She turned towards the girl who asked the question, and saw the whole cheer squad looking at her in awe.
Chrissy always wore her gym clothes; some type of track pant, t-shirt and jacket. But today, today was shaping up to be one of the hottest of the summer and she had chosen a tank top that morning before leaving the house.
Which now revealed the tattoo in question.
A small cluster of black bats looked to be flying across her right shoulder blade.
Chrissy laughed a little and rubbed her forehead. She always wanted to look professional at her job, always wanted to be taken seriously. She was a female gym teacher and cheerleading coach. She loved her job and valued the respect she earned from it. But today, looking at the group of girls that she took responsibility for and who now turned to her with fascination and wonder in their gaze…she felt that she could slip up just a little. Show off a bit to them, that yes, she wasn’t the too-perfect coach she had been striving for in everyone’s eyes.
She had a whole other side to her that very few knew about.
“Uh, yeah. Yeah just the one. My husband…he has one just like it that he got in high school. I guess I wanted to match him.” Chrissy smiled and felt her heart tick a little faster at the admission. She remembers the day in a flash; gripping Eddie’s hand too tight as he looked at her with such love and excitement that it made her want to cry. Remembers him taking such good care of her the days after, tending to the fresh ink that colored her skin to match his.
A few of the girls had love struck looks on their faces, imagining what it would be like having a matching tattoo with someone they loved.
It was a pretty great feeling, Chrissy thought, picturing every kiss that Eddie ever put on her shoulder since getting the tattoo years ago. The tingle it always shot up her spine.
The girls didn’t need to know about that though. So she just smiled to herself and blew her whistle, getting the team back in line for more drills. Maybe someday those girls would know what love felt like. How real, honest and raw love can be. Maybe someday a few of them would know what it’s like to want to match someone.
Inside and out.
Like her and Eddie did.
