“Meri,” she said softly as she curled up on the bed next to the woman, “Meri please don’t leave us. I know that it is tempting to retreat and just feel at peace, but we need you now.” Aeviara’s voice was quiet and she watched over her friend, imploring her to realize that there were loved ones still counting on her. Merialeth lay in a deep sleep, a coma induced by a chemical powder that had been used against her by a mad man. Aeviara hoped that she could hear her voice. Every bit of research that she had done on matters such as these indicated that coma patients varied, but that many could still hear the voices of their loved ones and were simply unable to respond. Other accounts said that it was the efforts of others that had brought them back from the brink. And for this reason, Aeviara lay next to her friend and spoke of all the important things and how much life had yet to offer them. Maybe it was a selfish thing to do on her part, or maybe she just couldn’t bear the thought of one more loss to this war.

Letter to Father

This letter is hand-delivered by courier. 

My Dearest Father,

I have been informed that you have been being kept up-to-date on the matters here by Lord Silvercrest. Pending charges in what is most assuredly a setup, my dear friend faces perilous times and yet at every turn our inquiries and efforts have been blocked.

Merialeth has been beside herself as have the others though we are all trying to keep a tight rein on emotion in the face of things. It would not do for us to come undone or tarnish the reputation of this house. 

Father, the danger did not end with Merialeth’s attack or the butchering of Helinia. Sadly, I must inform you that bit by bit the memories have returned to me and that I am much stronger than you probably think I am. I must also bring you news that the trials which have been set into play seem unrelenting and given the other information I suspect that HE is a pawn in a larger scheme. Ga’lanth Ashton does not so quickly switch off of a target, the last five years are evidence of that. I tried to speak to someone about it but it felt as though it was the least of their worries. 

I fear for your safety and the safety of the others. Lady Ashfall is taking some of the men and women to her private home and I believe that Lord Silvercrest will make accomodations as well. I am not certain where I will go as of yet. I know that the apartment in the city is out of bounds and truthfully I do not know if I could endure it without reliving that morning over and over again.

Lord Bladerunner has spoken to me and I have urged him to take the time to focus on his own house and holdings. That with the absence of his cousin, it is of the utmost importance that he secure all holdings which might be mutually tied so that his assets are not frozen as well. This is for his protection and the protection of their family as a whole. I have offered my assistance if he needs it in the matter of business, though I suspect that he will do quite well on his own. 

I am doing my best to do right by the oath I swore upon joining. Given the last two cases, Merialeth, Lord Silvercrest, and Lord Bladerunner have been forcing me to find rest where I can. If not for Lord Reshnir and his unwaivering support, I surely would have been undone. Father, please make sure to send a little something his way as a means of thanking him. He has become a quiet and unsung friend of mine who despite his fear and utter frustration at Lady Sophia’s plight, has also taken the time to ensure my well being. Naivaria is recovering slowly from the malady which beset her, a little better each day. Thankfully Lady Saphrael has not been a target and is in good health.

My god-mother has been returned to us and when I am not seeing to things here, I Have been checking in on her and ensuring that no permanent damage was done at the hands of her tormentors. It will still take time, but she is strong.

I hope that things are going well at the Estate. If you have need of me, please do not hesitate to summon me. I love you, papa. I miss you terribly, particularly as of late.

The Cracks

The days went by in an agonizing blur of darkness and itching and pain.  When the poultices were applied to her face and hands there was some relief, but they weren’t there all the time, for they had to be changed fairly regularly, and when there weren’t enough left to give her day-long comfort, the itching and pain began anew.  It was dulled, of course, for the tinctures that she was given--while awful in taste--worked wonders for her pain.  But it had been a couple weeks now and it wasn’t getting better.  She wanted to cry, but she couldn’t even do that, for if she did than that would surely make things worse.

Something had happened. Reshnir had stopped visiting, and Aeviara’s worry and exhaustion had skyrocketed in the past few days. Arandoros was beside himself; she didn’t need her empath gift to tell that, though surely it made things worse, for she felt the worry and the disgust and the anger there. She wished she could hold his hand and tell him that she was going to be okay, but the truth was that she wasn’t, and things like hand-holding were strictly out of the question. She didn’t know if orders were given to keep people out, but she would have thought that Lord Bladerunner would have cared enough to at least look in on her once--especially since she’d been staying at the Sunrunner Estate. Then again, maybe he had; she’d been asleep quite a bit, after all. She’d seen Theylia a couple times, but only fleetingly. She’d been told that Lady Ashfall would be taking over the search for an antidote. Talking was hard. Oftentimes she couldn’t even find the energy to eat or get up to go to the bathroom. Never had she felt more like an invalid than she did now, and even that was dwarfed by the ache in her heart that she felt for everyone else who had to deal with her. Just die already, Naivaria, and save them the trouble. The thought, unbidden and likely the product of a pair of weeks lying idle, caused her to sigh sadly against the poultice that rested on her face. Braydon could be heard stirring in response, but he said nothing to her. As it should be. Even your guard is tired of watching you suffer. You are the reason that your mother is dead. Doesn’t it serve you right? Her thoughts were running away with her again. It was during these times, when she didn’t even have the ability to keep her hands busy--her poor, blistered hands--that she had all the time in the world to think about her most important failings. No, Naivaria. Think of the good that you’ve done. Think of the name you are making for yourself to honor her. Think of your sewing, she told herself. But even that little command was soured with the realization that she may never sew again. Her hands were completely wrecked. What if they never found an antidote? What if they stopped trying? What if whatever had happened... happened to someone far more important than she? What if I’ve slipped through the cracks? Part of her despaired at that thought, even though she knew that it was likely not true. Part of her, some part that took after her late mother, wanted to follow in the woman’s footsteps and just end it. “Hnngh.” It was about the only sound she could make with the poultice on her face--she didn’t want to eat anything that came off of it, that was for certain. Now she heard Braydon stand and come to her side. He leaned down. “What is it, Miss Sunspell?” Gingerly the man lifted it just enough so that she could speak. “The potion,” she said, and there was a moment of silence before she clarified in her gritty voice. “Sleep.” As her guard moved to comply, there was a note of pity in the air about him and she inwardly cringed. She couldn’t deal with this right now. Sleep was only a temporary solution; but then, it was better than thinking about it. It was better than thinking at all.

"Can you be anymore obvious?"

 It was not very often that Merialeth - or anyone, for that matter - came calling on him at the Silvercrest Estate. Naturally, it had been a surprise to Eliot, but a pleasant one. Once he got over the shock of it all, he ushered her into the front parlor and uttered a word to a passing maidservant, who bustled off to prepare tea. “So, Lady Ashfall, to what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?”

The two exchanged pleasantries for a short time until the scent of the tea came wafting into the room. When Merialeth asked after the blend, Eliot only smiled. “It’s a brew recommended to me by Ae- Lady Starsong.” He said, accepting a cup from the maid and sipping lightly at it… Until she asked her next question.

“Can you be anymore obvious?”

Eliot glanced up at Lady Ashfall, his mouth turned down in a thoughtful frown. “Obvious? What do you mean, my lady?” He was nonplussed, to say the least.

A Package Arrives

Two large boxes arrived in the early afternoon hours addressed to Lady Merialeth Ashfall.  Inside were several things wrapped in white paper:  A dress, neatly gathered and pressed, a pair of shoes, and a necklace with earrings to match.  Atop the dress was a small envelope, and within, written in curling script, was a letter.

Dear Lady Ashfall, This dress was was made as a gift to you.  While I am sad to see that the previous was destroyed, I hope that this new gown will bring you joy when you wear it to your next formal event.  Please be aware that this was made with a few things in mind: - Violet, especially deep violet, is the color of royalty.  You deserve to be treated as a princess.  Never forget that.

- Black and white are a contrast between innocence and purity, and elegance and power.

- Purple roses signify enchantment, a trait which you hold in spades, and three roses stand for the three words ‘I love you,’ which is something that your friends very much feel for you. I hope that this dress serves as a good reminder that you are loved, and as ever, absolutely fabulous.
