Merlin | 3x02 The Tears of Uther Pendragon Part 2
Hi Zal! I hope you’re having a good day. I just wanted to ask what scene you think Merlin and Arthur would’ve had their first kiss and first I love you and first time if the show had explicitly written them as a love story?
Hi! Hope you're having a good day too! I've been thinking about this because a lot of it depends on the tone, right, so for first kiss, I think there a few possibilities:
1x11
Like...right here
or maybe 2x13.
Oh wait, OK I've changed my mind, it's not an either/or situation. 1x11 is their first kiss and obviously the scene would have to be a re-jigged a bit where at first Merlin tries to do some rescue breathing and when Arthur awakes from the sleeping draught, Merlin is like this
and Arthur lifts his head and they have a gentle peck and they live in that moment for, like, a second/half a second and then they're like
and they brush it off as a state of panic, as him solely trying to do mouth to mouth, it was not intentional, it was not romantic and then throughout the rest of season 1 and all of season 2 there's the romantic and sexual tension and then in 2x13 the sexual tension
and romantic tension
comes to a head and then when Merlin is going to go with Arthur into battle
and this is actually an overt confession
so then Arthur decides to kiss him
The first I love you, I want it to be kind of casual, like in 3x02 during this scene
Merlin will just blurt out, Lucky for you that I'm in love with you because NO ONE ELSE WOULD PUT UP WITH YOU! and neither of them realize exactly what was said until they're separated and they both act like it wasn't said because, you know, a bunch of stuff is going on but then here
he would add, and that's one of the reasons why I'm in love with you.
And then first time having sex... I would say 4x02
from another post of mine:
"oh-my-god-you're-alive-you're-not-dead-I-need-to-be-with-you-right-now" reunion sex
This was fun!
I just remembered this scene, and how Arthur’s like “God help me” in response to this statement by Merlin; looking back on it it, it’s kind of silly that he says that, given the fact that Merlin has saved his life several times at this point that Arthur acknowledges.
He pulls him out of the way of the knife in the first episode which is what gets him the job in the first place
He warns him of Valiant’s shield when he definitely would’ve been bitten and died if he hadn’t known
He drinks the poison for him which Arthur DEFINITELY remembers given how many times he repeats the sentiment that Merlin saved his life in that episode alone
He tries to drink the poison again during Arthur’s last test to break the curse he caused by killing the unicorn
He goes out to fight the dragon with him, which he doesn’t realize saved his life, but he does recognize Merlin’s dedication/loyalty before the battle
Obviously this excludes all the times behind the scenes, but these examples alone prove that Merlin does in fact protect him, or probably in Arthur’s egotistical head, tries to.
Just a little something I noticed that’s all!

Trying not to imagine Kilgharrah untying Merlin's chains with his giant talons, like untangling headphones when you've got acrylics on 😂
Reason number 76683 why subtitles are important for everyone: those scorpions are called 'serkets'. Yes I DID wonder how they got 'circuit' as another name for a scorpion! Yes, I'm an idiot.
We're really just gonna gloss over the fact that when Merlin didn't come home last night Gaius assumed he was with Arthur? And Arthur just accepts that logic without question? Okay.
Kilgharrah has been free for like a year and a half and he's dropped like half his bodyweight😂
Literally Merlin
"You must be strong. For Arthur's destiny and the future of Albion lie in your hands." #nopressure
I have to say, really, A+ banter between Arthur and Merlin. This scene and just in the whole two parter. Arthur very much the jealous partner, "where have you been" and Merlin the wiseass "you've not had your breakfast this morning, have you?" Its all just *chefs kiss*
This confrontation between Morgana and Merlin is bizarre. For one thing, the last time (as far as I can recall) that she dragged Merlin into a little alcove like that was when she was trying to convince him that Arthur was in danger, when she'd first started having visions and thought she might be going mad. Now she does it to threaten him. And he just stands there looking at her, doesn't say anything at all when there's about a million things he should be saying to her. I know it's a 'don't pull the thread' thing, but why would Morgana even bother threatening him? Surely she intends to kill him? Surely she knows that nobody will believe his word over hers, particularly since he has no proof, and since Uther's inexplicably wrapped around her finger now. I suppose I'm overthinking it, but it just seems like such an unnecessary moment to me.
This scene between Merlin and Arthur is 45 seconds long but it's such a standout moment for two reasons: 1) it's gay as hell 2) Arthur's got such big Giles energy that you'll never convince me Bradley didn't model that line directly after
Merlin listing the provisions he's procured to keep Arthur well fed throughout the siege has me craving salt fish but there isn't a single restaurant around here that delivers any version of it. I want you all to know I just fell down a rabbit hole watching cooking videos because apparently the only way I'll be able to satisfy this craving is to cook it myself.
Only Merlin could be so soft while being so cryptic.
Really glad they had Uther dressed and ready for battle and pushing himself to the front lines. One of the biggest issues I had with 2x13 The Last Dragonlord is the fuckin entire castle and surrounding villages are being assaulted by this dragon and Uther's hiding in a tower the whole time. I know he starts off with an undefined illness, which frankly I'm taking to be a version of exhaustion due to the stress his body and mind endured because of the mandrake root enchantment. But they show him wake up, realize what's going on, and scramble out of bed to go and join the fray which I think is a very important scene, if for no other reason than to correct the previous oversight. Uther is a lot of things, but he must be a warrior in some sense, otherwise he wouldn't have conquered Camelot to begin with.
Also Tony looks really cool dressed in armor and baring his teeth as he wacks his sword at an enemy combatant.
AND not for nothing but he didn't get hurt UNTIL Arthur started dragging him away. Ok fine I'll drop it but I'M JUST SAYING.
God I should've looked up an 'anatomy of a castle' at some point.
"Take him to hospital" really? They're going with 'hospital'
Morgana and Merlin's sword fight is so cool. She looks so good wielding a sword. But also how does he manage to do that spell to collapse the ceiling on her without her realizing he used magic
Morgana taking credit for saving the day and the look she and Merlin exchange is hilarious.
Merlin and Arthur are bickering husbands. I love it so much.
Merlin 3x02 "The Tears of Uther Pendragon: Part 2" Highlights:
Some Kilgharrah and Merlin bonding time
The animation of the dragon has improved dramatically so someone clearly gave the show more money before this season
Arthur being so mad at not being able to find Merlin that he basically announces to Gaius that he's not wearing any underwear
Kilgharrah is remarkably chill now that Merlin is a dragonlord
Oh look, Merlin, Kilgharrah can totally carry people on his back
I'M SURE THAT WILL NEVER BE A USEFUL THING TO REMEMBER LATER WHEN, SAY, THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE IS PAINFULLY DYING AND YOU HAVE TO GET HIM TO AVALON IN A HURRY
Arthur's room being absolutely trashed because Merlin's not been there to clean up after him
Arthur going on an absolute tirade at Merlin and Merlin's deadpan "You've not had your breakfast this morning, have you?" and then Arthur's "I'LL HAVE YOU FOR BREAKFAST!"
Merlin is done taking Arthur's shit and I am so pleased
Morgana cornering and threatening Merlin, basically going full villain
Sir Leon, man of the people, being concerned not only about the lives but also the livelihoods of the people in the outlying villages
(These are the reasons I ship him and Gwen post-finale – they would be such just and kind rulers)
Merlin trying to reassure Arthur that between the two of them they have the situation under control and Arthur's nonplussed expression at the idea of Merlin’s help
Yeah Gwen talk some sense into Arthur
The tragic secret little hand hold between Gwen and Arthur
Morgana getting her first magic staff
I wish someone believed in me as much as Morgause believes in Morgana
Merlin stockpiling Arthur's favourite foods to prevent him getting hangry
Also Merlin claims that Arthur's favourite food is pickled eggs, but the face Arthur pulls says otherwise, so now I have a headcanon that Merlin makes the pickled eggs himself and is really proud of them and Arthur doesn't have the heart to tell Merlin that he hates it, so he keeps eating them to the point that Merlin thinks it's his favourite
And Arthur would rather die than Merlin know the truth
Leon is so fucking tall omg (I didn’t realise)
*Helm's Deep vibes intensify*
Merlin going full Merlin Classic™ while giving Arthur a motivational speech before the battle
"There are times, Merlin, when you display a sort of... I don't know what it is. I don't want to say... It's not wisdom." *Merlin smiles at Arthur with a mixture of confusion and amusement before looking away and Arthur glances at him with a quiet admiration* "But yes, that's what it is." *Merlin smiles, really touched at Arthur's words and Arthur, suddenly concerned that he's given too much of what he feels away, rolls his eyes.* "Don't look so pleased. The rest of the time you're a complete idiot."
(THE SHIP OF DREAMS)
Merlin is so happy after this exchange
I want to bottle it to help him through the next few seasons
"For the love of Camelot" sounds like something I would mutter under my breath in place of "for fucks sake"
Arthur looks majestic af whenever he's in full battle-mode
Heeeeey creepy skeleton soldiers here we go
Morgana has a bone to pick with Camelot (hahahahaha)
Yasss Leon you're doing great, hun
Merlin trying to reason with Morgana and realising that she's now beyond saving
Any episode where Morgana gets to swordfight is a good one
Merlin destroying a priceless magical instrument to save Camelot
Morgana twisting the truth so that she comes off as the hero
Gaius trying to talk some sense of self-preservation into Merlin and probably not succeeding
