Just wanted to put this out there, because I’ve been watching WAY too much Merlin lately, but there’s this moment at the beginning of the last episode of season four when Merlin is on the run, on his own, from Agravaine and his men after the fall of Camelot. And he’s running through caves and ends up trapped with his back against the wall, and there’s this little thing that was so brilliantly acted: Merlin turns around and he is absolutely terrified, and in that moment he just looks at these men who are staring at him down the length of a sword and says “Be careful.” And that line caught me as interesting the first time I saw it, to the extent that I had to rewind and make sure I had heard correctly. And then when the rest of the scene played out, it became clear just how important that one line was.
Merlin is cornered. He knows he’s trapped, and he knows that somewhere not far away is Arthur, and he needs to get back to Arthur if it’s the last thing he does. So he’s staring at Agravaine and his men, and he doesn’t want to use magic because Agravaine knowing about his magic is pretty much guaranteed that Morgana is going to find out, and no one can afford that. If he shows them his magic then he will have to kill them. All of them.
And so in this moment he looks at them with this look in his eyes, this look of terror, and says “be careful.”
And of course the scene plays out and the men have no idea what they are getting into, and you see the exact moment where Merlin decides that these men are going to die.
And he raises his hands and kills. Every. Single. One of them. And then Agravaine gets back up, this person who Merlin and Arthur both trusted at one point, and Merlin looks him in the eye, confirms his identity, confirms that he has magic, and slaughters him. (Edit: And the only reason he even tells Agravaine any of this is because he’s going to die anyway. And the way Colin plays it is terrifying).
And then walks over the corpses to go find Arthur, just a few cracks closer to broken.
By the end of his life, Arthur knew what Merlin did to help him build the kingdom. But he never knew how much.
That one moment remains to this day one of my favorite acted moments of all time.
