I think Erik going away makes sense. Fassbender says he feels kinda down after DOFP, and when you think about it, he's all alone in this. Charles is hostile to him, Hank is by Charles' side no matter what, Mystique is more of a loner now, he has no one. Continuing would be useless because he knows Charles and Hank and maybe even Wolverine would try and stop him everytime he does something and as I said he's alone, he can't win. And going back to Poland is because despite everything that - (1)

Hey there!

First of all, Poland was never Erik’s home. Erik was born in Germany and was living a middle-class Jewish life there. His father was apparently a war veteran of WWI and they basically had a pretty good, respectable life. Then began the rise of the Nazis and Erik’s family fled to Poland, where they were captured and sent to the Warsaw ghetto. Managing to escape the ghetto, they were captured again, and Erik’s father, mother, and younger sister were murdered and Erik was sent to Auschwitz. Erik’s sum total of experiences in Poland were the ghetto (hell) and then Auschwitz (worse than hell). Poland was never his home.

Secondly, as many people have mentioned, after the war, Poland remained extremely dangerous to Jews (Polish neighbors killing Jews who returned, countless pogroms, and forced conversion and assimilation for decades). There weren’t many places in Europe that were friendly to Jews, but Poland was especially vicious. (Feel free to read up on the post-war life of Jews in Poland here) The most important conclusion: “There were an estimated 230,000 Jews in Poland in 1946. By the time of the fall of Communism in Poland in 1989, only 5,000–10,000 Jews remained in the country, many of them preferring to conceal their Jewish origin.”

As for Erik being all alone, I agree, but Erik’s never seemed to care before about being alone? He hunted nazis for years alone. Even when on a team, Erik tends to act alone, as in, do whatever the hell he wants to do. He’s at odds with Charles and the X-Men constantly in the original trilogy, and he never stops even with Charles, Logan and the gang against him.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m thinking XMA will try to justify Erik settling down in this way too. And then the loss of his family will justify his anger and give him a reason to join Apocalypse. I, personally, find it OOC since protecting mutants is literally Erik’s life and I don’t see him giving up his cause. I just wanted better for Erik since I love him so much and the writers tend not to treat him well.

Either way, I’ll be waiting for the amazing fic people will write to fix it all!
