Merman!Jean AU

Merfolk are easily exhausted using the few abilities they have, not to mention they spend so much time swimming at home that they barely have the energy to do anything too extraneous. Fish and kelp gives them energy, yes, but not NEARLY as much as eating a human, which is why they prefer them.

Their abilities narrow down to mental manipulation, emotional manipulation and polyglotism, but they also have the ability to convert their legs into a tail and vice-versa.

The process is EXTREMELY draining, not to mention extremely painful.

Armin comes home one day and finds Jean half-asleep in the bathtub, bleeding from his palm and paler than the tiles against the wall. Armin's frantic of course, but Jean just waves off all his fussing and lays his head against the side of the tub quietly.

For three days Jean's horribly quiet, the only sounds he makes are whimpering gasps of pain and choked murmurs in his language. Jean's tail suddenly vanishes under gray murky water and he doesn't dare move it, aggressively headbutting Armin in the chest if he tries to go anywhere near it.

On the fourth Armin comes up and the murky gray red is suddenly red. But there's no bones, no remnants of a body, just a Jean slipping under the water half-conscious and choking on the water he inhales.

Night of day four and Armin's awakened by a loud THUMP. He rolls over in his bed, thinking that maybe something fell over when SOMETHING clamors on top of him. Armin sits up a little to investigate and finds his face pressed against the softest foot he's ever felt in his life. "I have toes and they're hideous," he hears, and Armin chuckles at Jean's over-dramatic sigh. "Humans are so ugly, with your toes and your kneecaps but you make it look alright. I suppose." All Armin can do is laugh, gently push Jean's legs off of him and wrap his arms around his waist. "Just admit it. You like me."

Armin falls asleep before Jean can nod.

Alright while I finish up jearming's ACTUAL present have some headcanons for various AUs.

Merman!Jean

Jean not only speaks his own language and English, but also Russian. When Armin asked him about this, Jean shrugged and told him that a tourist tried to hook him and sell him to an aquarium. It's obvious who came out on top in THAT scenario. 

Jean picked up on the word sooka when he inherited the tourist's Russian and thinks it's precious, so he calls Armin that. Armin eventually looked it up and retaliates with miststück and Jean thinks it's beautiful.

Until he kisses Eren for the German language.

Jean sometimes likes to mess with Armin by speaking to him in Spanish mimicking Mina's voice. Armin just ignores him.

Armin did actually try to murder Jean. Twice. Once while Jean was asleep and the other while he was staring straight at him, empty gold eyes boring into him. Even without Jean's hypnotizing hold he still can't do it.

But Armin's not a good person. One day he spoke a little too loudly about Jean and the next thing he knows he has this reporter, wanting to write an article on his grandfather and snooping around. While he's trying to study to, Armin hears the beginnings of a struggle, enters the bathroom and sees Jean, bleeding black from a wound on his temple and unconscious being tied up by the reporter. He doesn't think. He only acts. And when Armin returns to his senses, Jean pulls him into his arms and kisses him breathless, needy and shaking, whispering quiet thank yous in every language he knows.

The Ereri/Jearmin Tumblr AU

Armin started off as a ocean enthusiast blog but then after he outgrew his shyness a little became more of a ocean enthusiast/advice blog. 

Armin also has a side-blog for themes he makes.

He leaves little anon messages for his followers from time to time telling them that they had a cute selfie or they were doing good or to eat some ice cream to feel better.

Jean has over 10,000 followers but he's pretty picky about his mutuals. He's only got around 60.

Jean has a link on his blog to his mutuals and will just randomly promo them because "look, rad people".

He's more of a video game/humor blog with occasional dashes of anime thanks to Marco.

He's reblogged every picture Mikasa's ever taken. Every one.

Armin custom-built Jean a theme for his birthday and hid a "I love you!" message in the code. It took Jean a year and a half to notice it.

Eren and Connie host Youtube LPs together after Eren joined up with Connie and Annie and he proved to be REALLY popular with the fans. They have an official Tumblr that the three of them run together and then each of them have their own.

For a while Eren's Tumblr actually had more followers than their LP Tumblr.

Eren's blog is similar to Jean's, but Eren tends to favorite indie/horror games versus Jean liking RPGs and shooters.

Levi became Tumblr famous after he went to a large con cosplaying Zuko and some shots of him went viral. Needless to say, Levi was utterly bemused when he logged on and saw his follower count practically double in one day.

He can pull off a hella Sailor Mars.(It was for a dare.)

He usually co-cosplays with Isabel and Farlan. Their "best" one was the year they went as Sora, Riku and Kairi for Isabel's birthday since she was a massive Kingdom Hearts fan. They even acted out scenes from the game live.

Sometimes Levi just MISSES Eren. Badly. But he hates to admit it, so he goes on anon and pretends to be someone else and whines about missing his boyfriend.

Bertholdt has a black-and-white photography blog (b&w is his favorite setting).

He's actually one of Jean's mutuals. It took a while but Jean and Bertholdt actually became pretty good friends. Armin was, of course, thrilled that his boyfriend and his best friend were getting along.

Bertholdt was looking through his lens and randomly snapped a shot of Jean when they were hanging out together. When they went through their pictures later Jean loved the picture so much he made it his signature icon for pretty much everything.

Jean has a proposal for Armin planned out - and it was SUPPOSED to be a secret, but Jean accidentally hit "publish" on Levi's ask instead of "answer privately" and Eren is REAL quick with that reblog button.

More merman!Jean because I'm thirsty for it.

Armin is one of those has-to-sing-in-the-shower people and Jean has very good ears. So while Armin's a few doors down singing along to Phantom of the Opera, Jean is excitedly batting his tail against the tiled walls and grinning like an idiot at the sound of his voice.

One day Jean is rubbing Armin's shoulders after a tense day at school and Jean wraps his arms around his torso and drags him into the water, setting him on his lap and nibbling gently on his ear (which always freaks him out because last time Jean bit holes right through it). But instead of nearly tearing his skin open, Jean instead begins to sing. And it's after Jean's throaty whisper of, "sing with me once again, our strange duet," that Armin recognizes the song.

"I learned it from you, Armin" Jean says with a chuckle, wrapping his tail fin around Armin's bare foot. "Your voice does things to me."

And Armin leans back into Jean's embrace while his mind screams, "Yes, yes, yes, YOUR voice does things to ME."

This ask got me thinking.

So technically, Armin's underneath a psychological hold that keeps him from killing Jean, right?

It's not like he's completely possessed by him, but Armin can't think about getting rid of him without his head suddenly aching and the thought... vanishing. He can't even hold the desire to remove something EXTREMELY problematic from his life but he sure can hold a murderer in his bathroom and pretend NOTHING happened.

It makes him sick, physically and mentally, and Jean sees this. He sees the pallor in Armin's skin and hears the whimpers from across the hall while he paces.

One day, Armin's had it. He's going to get rid of Jean, he's GOING to. So with a still hand and a frantic heart he pushes open the door to his bathroom and stares Jean dead in the eye.

There's a click, and the gentle twitch of fingers as Armin lifts his arm and levels the barrel of a pistol directly at Jean's forehead.

He doesn't even twitch.

"Are you going to kill me, Armin?" he asks, batting his tail against the tiled walls and blinking vapidly at him. He knows. He knows Armin can't do it, and as Armin's fingers twitch even more and his body shakes and he doubles over with racked, barely-suppressed sobs, his cocky thoughts are validated.

Armin is incapable of killing him and he knows it.

And it's so FRUSTRATING to Armin because this thing is a killer and he's keeping it in his house, befriending it, taking CARE of it and this were Eren he would've had 50 bullets in Jean already. Someone sensible would have RUN.

But no. Armin's snared and it makes him sick. His fingers are on the trigger and he can't pull it, so instead he screams and throws the pistol against Jean's forehead. It bounces right off, almost in a way that's funny, and a little stream of dark gray liquid pours from the open wound it made.

Jean huffs out a sigh and commands something in a language he can't understand, but the crook of his finger translates it perfectly. Armin staggers forward, still sobbing and when he weakly grasps onto the edge of the tub with his empty hands Jean strikes.

Armin's world goes white and he staggers, clasping his forehead as his brain tries to put it together - all Jean did was shoe him back, he put his fingertips against his forehead and shoved it, he didn't hurt him - but Armin's head feels... off. It feels...

Clear.

Jean wordlessly collects the gun from the shower caddy and hands it over, his eyes silently saying to try again, and suddenly Armin understands.

He nods, pointing the gun at Jean's head again and tells it to him, straight and narrow, without any sort of quiver in his voice.

"I'm not going to kill you. But we're playing by my rules now."

How does the mermaid!Jean/Armin thing not end with Armin putting a slug or knife or axe into Jean's face after Thomas gets eaten? I just don't even.

Mermaids are extremely persuasive, so unless you have a will like iron, they can basically boss a target around and milk them for everything they want out of them. Armin’s scared of Jean, yes, but he’s also incredibly intrigued by him and that intrigue has dropped his guard. Jean basically baited him by saying, “If you let me stay, you can do whatever you want with me, but if you try to harm me in anyway, I will personally ensure you love everything you have ever loved”.

But that’s why this isn’t an Erejean AU because Eren would have DEFINITELY killed him regardless.
