All of Sanctuary could agree on one thing: the oceans were no place for mortal men. Even the Nephalem were wary of the open depths, barely venturing out between island chains if they could help it.

For countless generations now, there had been a communal nightmare that came and went through every single mortal's mind when they slept: a creature of great and terrible powers that would rise up from the depths and cut down those who dared sail the seas. Glints of green lights ran down its black body, and some folk even reported that they had seen it have a humanoid appearance above its waist.

The rumour mill of Sanctuary ran rampant as always about the possible origins of the nightmares and the creature within. There were those that disregarded the warnings, of course; ships were lost, families destroyed, and there occasionally came the haunting creaking and grating of otherworldly greaves and boots on the docks.
