I'm already wondering how that would work with scales but maybe it's the same way certain types of monsters get one?

Absolutely! As for what it would be, that's a good question. My instinct is to say something with rays, otters or swirling patterns, but thinking on it, I suppose it would depend on if it happened after she met Grillby. Especially once Kai and Coralia were born, I'd imagine she'd get flames tattooed down her arm and wrist to better match.
I think tattoos with monsters have to have an element of magic to make it stick, so it might not be done with typical needles or super thick ones that could penatrate the hard surface. Could even be more of a painted on thing, but the magic makes the ink sink in and stay
