Wayne Barlowe's version of Hal Clement's Mesklinite, from Mission of Gravity
A Mesklinite from Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement, depicted by Wayne Douglas Barlowe for Barlowe’s Guide to Extraterrestrials. You’ve seen this picture before. Yes you have.
Mesklinites from Mission of Gravity by Hal Clement, depicted by Brian Mansfield (left) and Tony Gleeson (right). Clement was one of the most talented (and rigorously scientific) world-builders, and his creations have inspired many artists. In my bookshelf alone there are four different books discussing Mesklin, with Mesklinites illustrated by four different artists.
