For anyone who had their Message Tab gone/ DMs deactivated by tumblr
If your messages aren't working, they're all gone or even the icon is missing, you don't need to create a new blog to fix this. Try contacting the Staff first.
Click on the person icon.
Then you click "help" and you'll go to the help center.
There, click on "contact support"
Then you explain what happened and select the blog in question. In a few days the staff you contact you when the problem is fixed.

It happened to me and in 5 days I got an email saying things had been solved. I got all of my messages back, nothing was lost. My tumblr was also not appearing in the search box and i could not be tagged, those were fixed as well.
If you need a quick fix: you can create a sideblog and use it for DMs while the problem is being fixed. Just make a post and link your sideblog. You don't need to lose your entire blog at once, it's worth trying to fix it.
@staff is there a post to explain how to fix this? I've seen many people have the same problem...
