My 25 years of palaeoart chronology…

The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax & published by Columbia University Press) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. "Their Last Embrace" shows two Allaeochelys turtles copulating to their death in a toxic Eocene Messel Lake.

Some time ago we had the #PaleoZoo challenge on Discord, sponsored by Prehistoric Kingdom.

Goal was the creation of realistic zoo habitats that could hause extinct creatures. As examples I created a bunch of them over the course of a weekend.

On the second stream we worked on the Bahariya oasis (with Stomatosuchus), the Hesperornislagoon with a lazy Avaceratops, the Messel pit and a Glyptodon enclosure with some smaller terrorbirds as well

Extinct but newly discovered: Germany's oldest freshwater shrimp

An international team of researchers led by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin has described Germany's first fossil freshwater shrimp species in the journal Scientific Reports. Most shrimps love marine habitats, but this 48-million-year-old fossilized shrimp from the Eocene comes from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Grube Messel, a former freshwater lake. Since even rare organ structures have been preserved, the shrimp is another piece of the puzzle in the reconstruction of this unique ecosystem.
