Instant Messaging - Encrypted Chat Messenger
Instant messaging (sometimes called IM or IMing) represents the ability to easily see whether a chosen friend or co-worker is connected to the Internet and, if they are, to exchange messages with them.
IMing – basically it is the exchange of text messages through a software application in real-time. Generally included in the IM software is the ability to easily see whether a chosen friend, co-worker or "buddy" is online and connected through the selected service. Instant messaging differs from ordinary e-mail in the immediacy of the message exchange and also makes a continued exchange simpler than sending e-mail back and forth. Most exchanges are text-only, though popular services, such as AOL, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger and Apple's iChat now allow voice messaging, file sharing and even video chat when both users have cameras.
Instant messaging can be compared to texting as opposed to making a cell phone call. In the case of messaging, it is like the short form of emailing. Secure instant messaging is a specialized form of instant messaging that along with other differences, encrypts and decrypts the contents of the messages such that only the actual users can understand them.
Traits of a secure instant messenger
Almost by definition alone a secure messenger cannot be a social messenger. Therefore to be considered secure a messenger must behave differently than one used for more social purposes.[9] Traits of a secure instant messenger include the ability to:
· Provide a 'stealth' online presence
· Not log or store any information regarding any session or event.
· Operate as a decentralized computing model—not relying on third party servers for message security and handling.
Recent news events have revealed that the NSA is not only collecting emails and im messages but also tracking relationships between senders and receivers of those chats and emails in a process known as „meta data” collection.
'Meta data' refers to the data concerned about the chat or email as opposed to contents of messages. It may be used to collect valuable information.
Secure instant messengers aren’t needed for every chat session but when there is a requirement for private, secure and untraceable messaging there is no other means to effect those requirements.
In the past, both users had to be using the same software. Many current clients, however, allow interoperability between networks, including Microsoft's recently developed Live Messenger. Developments in mobile cellular phone technology now allow handset users to always be available via IM, through such popular devices as the T-Mobile Sidekick II or other smartphones.
