Messines, QC
Visitors inspecting the crater caused by the explosion of a mine (one of nineteen) fired underneath German positions near Messines in western Flanders by the British Army on June 7th 1917. About 10,000 German soldiers died, amongst them almost all of the 3rd Royal Bavarian Division; the blast was one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions of all time and was audible in Dublin and London.
