I should probably just stay out of the wankfests that happen around here but sometimes I just can’t help myself. So please enjoy my latest meta-salt.
Jason Todd’s father was a low level criminal.
His mother was a drug addict who od’d.
They lived in poverty before they died.
After that Jason became a homeless child.
Like actually, really homeless. Like squatted in a condemned building and ate food out of trash cans homeless.
Dick and his family were the star act of a popular circus. They are firmly middle class. Hey, you wanna know what your average trapeze artists (not the super elite like the Graysons) make?
And hey, what’s your biggest expense? Rent? Food? Guess what’s usually paid for? Schooling on the road is also usually covered by the circus so Dick got an education too.
If someone tries to tell you that you’re classist (or that it is, in general classist) to like Jason Todd more than Dick Grayson you are well within your rights to laugh in their faces.
They either haven’t read a single fucking comic book or they don’t have any idea what ‘classim’ is.
Why are the same people who keep bitching about DC (and fandom) stealing Dick’s characteristics and giving them to the other batboys trying so hard to make Dick something he’s not while appropriating other characters background? Often while complaining Jason&Tim&Damian fans are trying to keep some kind of ‘trauma score card’ while doing that exact same thing?
You don’t have to try to say Dick’s parents sucked or that he grew up unloved and in poverty or try to elevate the importance of that time his heart was intentionally stopped to save his life, in order to make him interesting. You don’t have to steal all the things that make Jason Jason in order to make Dick interesting. He already is interesting. He’s an incredibly emotionally complex character with his own history of awful shit that can be explored.
If you don’t like your character the way he is, maybe you should try to find a different one.
