- 💧water: i work in/with rain as often as i possibly can! i don’t have any bodies of water within walking distance, but when i can, i like to go creeking. hearing the flowing water is an incredibly cleansing and refreshing experience. i also collect water from a bunch of natural (and sometimes artificial) sources to use for my plants or myself. don’t worry, i never collect from stagnant water and i always boil it! i also swim, but not as often as id like. wave pools are the closest i can get to being in the ocean, since i live in ohio.
- ⛰ earth: this is my other big element. i have a rock collection ive been working on since i was in preschool. i go barefoot or flip-flopped as much as the weather permits. hiking, rockhounding, or even just drawing with a stick in the dirt are all some of my favorite earth activities. the cats at our local gem and mineral shop finally know who i am because of how many times i stop by with whatever extra money i have at the time, with intent to buy yet more rocks! just holding my favorite specimens fills me with energy.
- ⚙️ metal: depending on the culture of origin, metal is either a subset of earth or a separate element unto itself. i tend to associate metal with copper, gold, silver, bronze, iron, and brass specifically. as part of my rock collection, i have some copper. other than that, my interaction with metal is primarily utilitarian. i sometimes use it to amplify communication, but that’s about it. it’s the element most closely associated with money, so it would do me well to work with it more, i think.
- 🌲 wood/plant: this is another one that changes depending on the culture. in central chinese tradition, wood is one of the five elements. in many european cultures, plants were not themselves elements, but spirits or faeries. either way, i use a lot of dried herbs in my spells, and my house plant is doing well! i also carve storm-felled sticks into wands, staves and brooms.
- 🔥 fire: i enjoy fire well enough now, but i used to be incredibly scared of it. i overcame that once i learned how to properly start, sustain, and extinguish one for myself, but i still don’t work with it much. it’s just because i get hot very easily. cute little votive candles are fine, and i like those a lot, but unfortunately it doesn’t feel like it has the same strength as a bonfire.
- 💨 air: i barely use air in my magic. i use breath work as the foundation of my grounding and cleansing, and occasionally when the atmosphere seems too stagnant outside, i’ll try to call up a breeze. it doesn’t usually work out, which is what i get for not giving air it’s due, i guess.
