Poison - I Want Action,1986
Here’s my wishlist of things I’d love for all underground bands to do. Following these tips will help you establish a solid relationship with fans and earn more money from your hard work. 1. Use Bandcamp. This platform pays you better than the rest and gives you control of your output. You’re losing money by ignoring its potential. 2. Use Discogs - the Wikipedia of music. Make sure all of your releases are listed and described accurately. This is incredibly helpful for collectors. You can also sell stuff here and make more money. 3. Sell patches and other items in the $5 range. Heroin dealers figured this out long ago. Foster a relationship of trust and dependence with fans by offering low cost items. After a positive experience, fans will be comfortable buying higher ticket items from you. Also, patches are objectively awesome. I want to be your walking billboard. Sell me a sweet patch and make this happen. 4. Social media matters. Stop fighting it and stay active so fans know you haven’t disbanded. Again, cultivate relationships with fans who want to take an interest in, and be supportive of, your passion. 5. Good artwork still matters. There are more bands now than ever competing for attention and pixel space. Great album artwork funnels new fans to your band and adds an extra dimension of awesomeness to the record. Any other tips you can think of for the hard working bands out there? I love you all and want you to succeed in what you’re doing!
