i love it when developers poke fun at another series or previous installment through a little gag graphical element, gameplay element or line of dialogue

it makes me feel satisfied when i get the reference

to be perfectly honest it all depends on the gimmick itself; so i'll put an example of a good usage of this and a bad usage of this

good example: tiny huge island from super mario 64 - using pipes to change the size of the island to go access certain areas and alter various things -- it's a shame it's used minimally, but that works to ensure that the entire process isn't tedious as fuck

bad example: rail canyon from sonic heroes - grinding is a fun gimmick when used properly -- it's not a fun gimmick when it's 75% of the fucking level and has piss-poor rail switch mechanics
