last summer i hosted a read-along of the odyssey on twitter/instagram and it was SO MUCH FUN to hear everyone’s thoughts! we had a lovely mix of people who’d studied homer, people who’d read the odyssey once or twice before, and people who were completely knew to it and i had such a good time and felt such a lovely sense of community that i’ve decided to do it all over again!
this year, we’re going to read ovid’s metamorphoses. i’ve ordered the stephanie mccarter translation which was published this year and looks (🤞) to have similar vibes to my beloved emily wilson’s odyssey. there’s no set text though, so feel free to join in with whichever translation/edition you can get your hands on - i’m a big advocate of libraries and free online translations, so please don’t feel like you have to rush out and buy an expensive copy!
we’re going to read one book per week (= roughly 750 lines of poetry) and meet on sundays to discuss what we thought and what we liked and what we didn’t. the cool thing about the metamorphoses is that it’s episodic, so if you can’t/don’t want to read the whole thing, that’s totally fine - just dip in and out and read whichever scenes/stories interest you!
i’ll post again with reminders nearer the time, but for now here’s the schedule + some more info:
