         lips  part  slightly,  watching  as  he  takes  a  step  closer  to  her.  he  seems  agitated,  nervous  even,  and  jo  cannot  tell  why.  it  worries  her,  she  knows  the  type  of  life  he  leads.  in  fact,  she  is  about  to  ask  him  what’s  wrong  when  he  speaks  up.  you  were  always  my  maybe,  ya  know?  ‘maybe  they’d  finally  ask  me  out.’  ‘maybe  when  i  wasn’t  the  one  looking,  they  were  noticing  me  too.’  i  know  it’s  silly,  but.  you  were  always  in  the  back  of  my  mind.  he  renders  her  speechless.  as  buck  talks,  all  jo  can  do  is  look  at  him  and  listen.  it  is  funny  because  he  was  in  the  back  of  her  mind  too,  the  lingering  possibility  of  maybe.  but  maybe  is  a  dangerous  word  and  hope  is  a  dangerous  feeling  &  once  you  let  the  darkness  in,  it  is  hard  to  remember  both  of  those.  there  had  been  no  maybes  or  hope  or  him  for  a  while,  there  was  just...  emptiness.  but  @metanoiahs​  is  there  now,  all  the  time.  her  thoughts,  her  dreams  &  her  heart.  but  it  is  all  still  just  a  maybe.  he  said  were.  as  in  past  tense.  after  the  shock  washes  over  her,  it  is  that  word  she  holds  onto.  were,  as  in  not  are  (  not  anymore.  )

          he’s  only  now  gazing  at  his  watch,  eyes  widening  a  bit  at  the  time.   ❛  geez,  we’ve  already  been  at  this  for  two  hours  ---  ❜   he  looks  over  at  brittany.   ❛  what  do  you  say  we  take  a  study  break?   we  could  grab  a  bite  to  eat  and  squeeze  in  an  episode  of  friends  or  two  if  you  want.  ❜   he  offers  her  a  smile,  eyebrows  waggling  in  suggestion.

   the door of the bathroom swings open and she assumes it’s mer.   or amelia.   either way,   it’s one of her sisters.   someone she can trust with her life.   she doesn’t bother looking when the words tumble out of her mouth.   her filter’s always been pretty shit,   anyway.   ❛   i did a pregnancy test.   ❜

     she turns around to look a sister in the eye,   but it’s so far from the person she was expecting.   so much so that she lets out a little shriek.   ❛   alex   !   ❜   a familiar shame washes over her body.   she closes her eyes,   hoping that when she opens them he’ll be gone.   maggie’s head shakes as well.   ❛   you know what   ?   you heard none of that.   oh,   my god,   i can’t believe this is happening   . . .   ❜

      tears  glisten  in  light  hues  as  she  looks  at  him.  she  is  tired  of  saying  goodbye,  why  are  they  always  saying  goodbye?  it’s  not  fair.  none  of  it  is.  “if  i  just  lay  here,  would  you  lay  with  me  and  just...  forget  the  world?”
