James' personal calendar 1996.

From the Black Box: Faxed pages from James Hetfield's personal calendar for March and April 1996. James' schedule includes recording dates for Load as well as interviews, photo sessions, and personal events.

These were later printed in an old issue of So What! magazine as part of James’ Fridge List.

James' guitar notes for 2x4.

From the Black Box: "A handwritten page from James Hetfield’s notebook outlining arrangement, tone, and production ideas for “2 x 4." The notes give insight into James' personal musical notation language, like a shaky letter G to indicate vibrato, or the note to "beat on it like the drums do," which formally would mean to play a staccato triplet at fortissimo volume."

Ninja Star logo development

Concepts in order from first to final.

From the Black Box: "These documents trace the evolution of the “Ninja Star,” James Hetfield's four-pointed logo formed from interlocking, stylized M shapes. The earliest concept appears as a doodle on a magazine advertisement, later refined on the back of a travel itinerary. Hetfield experiments with layout, directional flow, and the potential incorporation of band member initials. Notes reference packaging ideas, including a leather-bound or embossed CD cover.”

Faxed correspondence dated February 15, 1996, addresses ink density and confirms final print specifications for the artwork."
