Oh dear, I just found this ask. So sorry it took so long!
From what I know: It hasn’t been said directly that he was insecure as a kid. However, he was insecure about it for as long as he was in Metallica until he got his teeth straightened.
Using context clues, I’m sure he was, but I’m here for facts and not so much speculation :(.

i saw a post on tumblr (actually it was a reddit screenshot know that im thinking about it) a while back saying smth like "old metallica songs: 'The Wretched Injustice of the Ivory Tower'; new metallica songs: "Im Mad (Angry As Fuck)
and i thought it was so true. do u have any thoughts or theories on why this might have happened
I like to joke about this all the time— but i really have spent time analyzing their music journey… probably because I myself am a learning musician.
Anyway: Theres many things that go into this, really. Maturity, life experience, things happening at the time.
You can tell the journey they took from KEA being about running around town destroying things, as they would do at their young rowdy ages. Then RTL and MOP were basically about fears of control and death, followed by AJFA which.. in some ways is the same thing. That has a lot of thought but young imagination put into it.
But newer songs are from the mindset of an older person, who has lived life, and gone through all the motions— but is still learning. No adult is truly anything past a child pretending.
Theres lots to this, but this is the simplest way I could put it lol.

Brian Slagel’s compliation album Metal Massacre was released!
Brian Slagel was a good friend of Lars, and was able to get Metallica on the first pressing, along with many other LA metal bands in the scene.
Hit the Lights was first featured on this album.
Such a Shame by Trauma would go on to be featured on the second Metal Massacre.
