World Meteorological Day 2023: History

The history of World Meteorological Day dates back to 1950, the year the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) was established. It is WMO an institution within the United Nations that coordinates and encourages international cooperation in fields of meteorology, hydrology as well as related sciences.

Its main objective is to facilitate the exchange of climate-related as well as weather information between members and promote the expansion of meteorological services around the globe. To commemorate its founding and commemorate its birth it was the WMO designated the 23rd day of March in the year 1961 as World Meteorological Day (WMD).

Die Luft

Ini adalah sebuah tulisan sederhana tentang langit. Tentang benda berwujud gas yang sebenarnya selalu menekan kita dari atas ubun-ubun. Tentang kanopi imajiner yang menjadi layar keluarnya warna-warni pagi, sore, dan malam. Tentang udara dan ilmu alamnya.

Kita hanya tahu, dari guru-guru di sekolah kita sebelumya, atmosfer berisi oksigen dan zat-zat lain yang dibutuhkan untuk kelangsungan hidup di muka bumi. Kita hanya menelan sejak kecil, bahwa langit itu biru dan tertanam pada gambar-gambar sederhana di buku berukuran A4 lanskap yang penuh coretan krayon-krayon kita yang hampir tidak pernah rapi. Belepotan, bahkan sampai ke telapak tangan. Tak lupa dengan putihnya awan yang selalu menggumpal-gumpal bentuknya. Ditambah sedikit aksesoris "kumis-kumis terbang" dari antara gunung kembar penanda akhir jalan yang memisahkan sawah dan laut.

Walaupun gambar pemandangan di masa kecil tidak selalu seperti yang disebutkan barusan, warna langit pada buku-buku gambar milikku hampir semua berwarna biru. Ya, biru langit nama warnanya.

"Entah apa sebenarnya si langit ini", begitu pikirku dulu. Kenapa harus selalu biru? Apa dia ikut bergerak bersama awan-awan yang menggumpal? Lalu, makin aku perhatikan, ternyata tidak semua awan berbentuk seperti biri-biri, seperti yang orang-orang gambarkan. Ada yang berbentuk serabut-serabut tipis, seperti ombak, seputih salju, sampai semuram abu-abu celana seragam SMA di lemariku.

Dulu, semakin dipikirkan, mendadak warna biru itu menjadi warna tanda tanya. Benda-benda putih yang mengiringinya pun menjelma bentuknya menjadi tanda tanya. Hingga akhirnya aku bertemu dengan "ilmu tentang yang di atas". Entah apa yang dipikirkan Aristoteles 17 abad yang lalu tapi hasil pemikiran beliau benar-benar membuka mataku kembali.

Warna tanda tanya itu kembali menjadi biru. Bahkan juga merah, hijau, kuning, dan lain-lain. Benda-benda putih itu kembali menjadi awan yang kemudian aku sadar ternyata ada air yang melayang-layang di atas sana. Malahan es bisa melayang lebih tinggi. Tanda tanya yang lain membuang titiknya dan membentuk lengkungan beragam warna. Begitu pula tanda tanya yang lainnya yang menjelma rupa dan warnanya.

Pada ilmu ini aku jatuh cinta dan di bawah langit yang sama cinta itu ada.
