Wall Street Journal: Opera for a Younger Crowd
Pia Catton of the Wall Street Journal profiled Metropolis Ensemble for its performance in David Bruce's new opera, "The Firework Maker's Daughter," currently playing at The New Victory Theater (May 3-12).
"Performing in the Theater District will be new for Metropolis, but not entirely unusual; the company has played all over the city, including at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival... Mr. Cyr said Metropolis is growing at a "slow and steady" pace, but the potential is strong thanks to the talent level of the musicians and the audience interest in new music. "You would think it would be a harder sell, but it's not," he said. "A lot of people are very curious about what their contemporaries are doing in music. Gallery-goers, literary types, architects and artists say, 'Hey, what's happening in music?'"
The piece highlights accomplishments of the Metropolis community over the past few years, including the 2010 Grammy nomination for Avner Dorman's "Mandolin Concerto," Vivian Fung's recent Juno Award for her "Violin Concerto," and Caroline Shaw's 2013 Pulizter Prize in Music. The article also features some of David Bruce's major works, including "Cut a Rug" for Silk Road Ensemble and "The Given Note" for violinist Daniel Hope. Read the full article...
