EDF (national electric) has a new state sponsored campaign for us all to #metstonpull (put on your sweater) and drop the house temperature by 1°C to “Save The Planet” *cough*not overtax the grid as they messed up closing a nuclear station too early with no replacement*cough* and it’s going down about as well as you’d expect from an already penny-pinching population who have had it up to here with personal responsibility when we’re in lockdown or working from home, no vaccinations in sight, we all recycle, all switched to LED, all only heat the bedrooms, switch off the lights, turn off standbys, use timers for laundry and dishwashers, have a brick in the toilet to reduce the water bill and live in drafty concrete junk that overheats in summer. In this house, when it freezes we have a set of cardboard and polystyrene slats to put up against the windows. If there are people wearing just a tshirt at home from autumn to spring I havn’t met any. Twitter’s just sort of blinking at the campaign in disbelief that they’re branding this as an ecological thing when we all know the grid would be utterly overwhelmed if everything was open due to a huge blunder by energy management. I mean at least own it and say “mistakes were made” and we need zero blackouts for the hospitals and old peoples’ homes right now. We’ll all wear coats and double the socks. Just don’t lie.
