Day 33 – sunlounger hunger games

True to her word, J woke up even earlier today. She popped down at around 7am, confident that she would have better luck reserving sunloungers. Apparently a lot of Germans got in last night, as the selection was still limited. She grabbed the last pair of sunloungers on the beach that are shaded and some decent sunloungers near the pool bar. She then went back to bed and waited for S and C to wake up.

S and C got up at around 11:30am and went to the pool. J said she would follow after she went to the gym. After summoning the mental fortitude to face the gym / procrastinating for two hours, she made it to the gym and then met S and C for lunch. That was a mistake. Today we decided to try ‘Mexican Day’ at Bayside, one of the poolside restaurants. If you’re familiar with the old adage “Don’t drink the water,” try “Don’t eat the food”. It was the worst meal we’ve had here. Picture of the menu below. Hoping to wash the meal down with tasty margaritas, we learned something new. Apparently some people forget to put lime juice and Cointreau into the margarita, leaving it basically a glass of tequila. Overall, pretty lousy.

In the pool today, S and C met a couple from Maryland. The lady is a professional chef. She and C discussed the cooking competition in the Cayman Islands, which C has wanted to attend and this lady had participated in it. Maybe she could give some advice to the people who thought they could cook ‘Mexican’ food. We also spotted the elusive Lisa, who came out for some drinks at the pool bar. Kelly and Lisa had wisely avoided Mexican Day and had room service for lunch.

While we had reservations for Barefoot tonight, everyone was in the mood for Japanese so we headed to Soy. The place was rammed so we had to sit at the outdoor bar for a while until a table became available. We ran into our friends from the Isle of Wight, who were pretty depressed about heading back to the UK tomorrow. Apparently Isle of Wight has jumped from Tier 1 to Tier 3, so it won’t be pretty. Once again, one of J’s dishes was inedible as their interpretation of tofu salad is a tuna sashimi salad. That would be OK if you liked tuna sashimi. Otherwise, S and C enjoyed their meal. The vegetable tempura was a particular highlight and the sake was overflowing from the 6 flasks which J and S polished off.

Although J had been looking forward to country night, the jerk chicken Cobb salad from Mexican Day kicked in, so S and C listened to country night. Fortunately for J, she’s going to be here for one more country night next week as we are trapped in Sandals (“You can check out anytime you want, but you can never leave…”). In our case, we literally did check out, but are somehow still here. The pub was very quiet tonight – none of the regulars were there, so S and C just played darts.
