like, i’m not gonna’ lie, despite being of mexican heritage and being proud of it, i do recognize that the country has its problems. machismo, along with homophobia (despite the country recognizing same-sex marriage), run rampant in the streets. not only that, but enrique peña nieto seriously needs to boot his ass out of office and realize that he’s failing the very people he’s supposed to serve and protect. adding to the fact that little to absolutely nothing has been done about the missing 43 students by his administration, it’s not hard to notice that many problems exist in the already struggling country... and these are just off the top of my head.
but i’m also not gonna’ lie, looking back at where i was several years ago, where i problematically thought for a time period that my heritage wasn’t that big a deal/something i wanted to call attention to, i wouldn’t trade my cultural roots for anything else in the world. yeah, some will argue that my lack of a tight handling on the spanish language, or whatever else gets you labeled as “not mexican enough,” is enough to discredit chicanos like me, but you know what? al diablo con todo eso. i am of mexican heritage and i’m damn proud of it. was i born here in the states? yeah, but again, there’s this - in an age where racist politicians expect me to apologize, feel shame, or try to use my heritage against me, as a way painting my family and everyone like them and i as a bunch of “freeloaders” and “criminals,” i sure as hell won’t stand for that. i’m aware of my roots and i wouldn’t trade them for anything else in the world.
