A Poem Titled: What Am I?
I am a contradiction,
but not a work of fiction.
I claim my native blood with love,
Not knowing names or where they’re from.
-
The Spanish came with gun and tongue.
Now Spanish blood does run and run.
My heart beats bum bum-bum bum-bum.
All their bloods, in mine they run.
-
The Spanish hearts I believed to be beneath me,
Were beating just as swiftly.
For me it was a civil war,
As across the sea came ever more.
Father, Father, blood and gore,
Not brother yet, but after war,
The blood would mingle more and more.
-
Far from their land my culture grew
And over here was all I knew.
I’m a product of another time and space,
Yet bear resemblance to this foreign place.
