Yesterday, we got to play around in the new Risolab at SVA, run by the MFA Visual Narrative program. They have two brand new Risograph machines, and are in the process of setting up a studio space organized around them with bookmaking and work spaces. They currently offer several Continuing Education courses that are centered around Risograph, as well as general access to the studio for a lab fee. I’d seen a lot of Riso printed stuff before, but had never got a chance to play with one before. It’s essentially a xerox mated with silkscreen, but instead of taking a few hours to coat and burn a screen, it does it in minutes. It allows for a surprising level of image fidelity, as well as 2 colors per pass, which can be swapped out. It also does fine adjustments to dot density and positioning while on press, which greatly aids proofing. Risos are intended as industrial-use printers, meaning that it can handle tens of thousands of prints, although the stencils that it burns degrade over the course of a few thousand prints. I printed a sketchbook spread from Chinatown, and threw a super quick tone layer over it with ink and tracing paper. The registration is off, but then again part of the charm of Riso is its fast and loose quality. It’s crazy fun, and I want one.

Nathan Fox

Nathan Fox is an illustrator, editorial and advertising artist. He does random gallery shows here and there as well as murals and installation work. He is a comic book guy, too, having drawn books such as Hawken: Melee, FBP covers and logo designs, Dogs of War, Haunt, Fluorescent Black, Dark Reign: Zodiac, Pigeons from Hell, DMZ fill-in issues and more. He is currently Chair of the MFA Visual Narrative Department at the School of Visual Arts.

Analog to Digital, assignment 1

Our first assignment in my Digital Arts class was to create a simple portrait painting from photo reference. After some time on the internet, I found this wonderful guy:

This was the first go at the portrait:

I brought it into class, and eventually asked my teacher for some advice on doing the forehead wrinkles. I was scared that if I did them at this stage, they would stand out way too much and break the continuity of the lighting. (Plus, they'd look like spaghetti ridges.)

He brought my painting up the his projector and showed the class some things that could be done. First, he pointed out that my shadows weren't  dark enough, which in turn diminished the strength of my highlights (forehead, nose and cheeks). After that, he made some rough lines, using the same color used for the shadows.

I recreated those corrections here:

 I also increased the size of his forehead, and cleaned up the edges on the hat, as he also suggested. I must say, I think it looks a lot better.
