They never actually give an explanation behind his code name but in my mind Mantis is called the Third Child because he's the third child documented to have extrasensory abilities.

Adding to this, The Sorrow was the first child (ghost powers, obviously).

I waffle on the identity of the second child but tend to just give the title to Ocelot (who I do like to think of as having SOME form of abilities similar to his father's, since that was the original intention behind The Sorrow's creation from a narrative standpoint, even if they later went back on it.)

I have a headcanon that the Shining Lights Incident was when Ocelot started to *really* experience the side effects of the powers he inherited from The Sorrow.

I imagined he'd start seeing ghosts around Mother Base and first shrug them off as sleep deprivation hallucinations, but he connects the dots later.

He would have seen ghosts throughout his life after Operation Snake Eater and perhaps earlier. However, I believe he hasn't stayed in one fixed location (like Mother Base) long enough and simultaneously experience mass death at the fixed location until the Phantom Pain era.

He'd be scared at first and might think, "what's happening to me???". But he grows used to it by the time we reach the Tanker and Big Shell Incident era, because he seems to be more annoyed than confused or concerned when Liquid's arm possesses him.

Otacon/Hal Emmerich Headcanons:

-The first Anime he ever watched was Gunbuster or Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (mech animes in the 80s) whom he watched with his father.

-Hal is Autistic, just like his father. He shares a lot of hyperfixations with his dad, the most common one being mechs and mechanical components in every day life tools like microwaves, computers, etc

-Hals love language is touch but also has parallel play, info dumping, swapping support, and deep pressure. He shares this a lot with Snavid whom I also headcanon to be autistic

-His favorite brand of ramen is Shin Black which he has a special ramen and chopstick set for

-He wears goofy patterned boxers like anime, video game, or just one of his interests print

-He suffers from extreme anxiety and social awkwardness from which he inherited from his father

-MGS4 Otacon will forever be an Otaku in my heart even though he says "he used to be one." You still watch anime, boy!

-prefers baths over showers, he likes to feel warm

-is a wall sleeper when in bed, Snavid takes the outside

-sees Snavid as a dog a lot and often catches himself talking to his partner like one in a cute way (ruffling his hair, squishing his cheeks, nuzzling him, etc)

-Otacon created his little 8-bit avatar to help him convey emotion and tone through his texts, Snavid is very grateful for it as well

-tried to smoke one of Snavids cigarettes but Dave found out and got upset and worried, pestered Otacon about what was wrong and if he was stressed

-Finds hygiene difficult but Snavid encourages him

-Sunny reminds Hal of Emma hence why he was overprotective, but he then saw his father in himself and began to let Sunny explore the world

-During Shadow Moses, with the sneaking suit, Itacon followed him constantly without Snavid knowing

-is such a turtleneck guy

-thinks about his mother, but despite never seeing her really he can't find himself to connect to her being

-these are just a few headcanons, I could always keep writing but here's some food :)
