The OVA animation for Chapter 431 was officially announced at Jump Fiesta 2026, but here's why I'm not worried about Chapter 431 being animated as a bkdk/dkbk shipper (and why you shouldn't be either [happy]) Post below ↓↓↓

This is a rough translation of Horikoshi's message at Jump Fiesta. I've provided screenshots so feel free to translate yourself:

"Watching it through to the finale, I realized once again what a truly blessed manga this was.

There were, of course, those who loved 'Hiroaka' (My Hero Academia) and got involved with great enthusiasm. But I also think there were definitely many people who didn’t particularly like the series or anything, but were involved simply because it was their job.

Thanks to the work that every single one of you completed one by one, this massive entity called 'Hiroaka' was built up and was able to reach its conclusion. Realizing that has left me feeling somewhat sentimental.

That is precisely why knowing I'll get to see Deku and the others moving and talking again in the future makes me purely happy.

I am looking forward to seeing the 'back seat where a person sinks' in animated form! Seriously, why did I choose that back seat design?

And so, 'Hiroaka' will still continue on. I will be waiting excitedly right alongside all of you!

Now, if we analyze Horikoshi's message at Jump Fiesta as well as his posts after Chapter 430 was published (August 5th, 2024) and the final episode of Season 8 aired (December 13th, 2025), we see three very important key words/phrases:

1. Finale

2. Conclusion

3. The End

All of these are very important to take note of because Horikoshi is making it extremely clear that his intended ending was Chapter 430, or in this case, Season 8 Episode 11. Everything that airs beyond is not intended to tie in directly with the main canon story whatsoever.

Chapter 431 is, and has always been, nothing more than bonus material (hence the adaptation of an OVA, rather than including it as the final episode in a typical 12-13 episode season).

Chapter 430 is thematically and canonically the conclusion of the manga’s main story or the “final chapter” essentially. It is the ending of the main story, but not the end of My Hero Academia as a franchise.

Horikoshi often separates the story’s ending from the franchise’s continuation. When he says “HiroAka will continue,” he’s acknowledging that the anime (which could have extra adaptations, OVAs, or future projects) and the universe itself to include spinoffs, bonus stories, original content, etc. will “continue to move and talk” metaphorically through adaptations and ongoing love for the work.

This means Horikoshi can realistically call Chapter 430 the end and still say the anime "continues on" if Chapter 431 is adapted because to him, Chapter 430 = the official story conclusion and Chapter 431 = Bonus (therefore not part of the “final conclusion” he’s referencing)

Even when directly questioned about a romantic connection for Izuku in Chapter 431, Horikoshi says to "use your own imagination," which still never confirms a canon ship for Izuku and intentionally so. Horikoshi has never wanted to confirm a romantic connection for Izuku (he 100% easily could if he really wanted to) because Izuku's and MHA's importance goes beyond that of a romantic connection.

He says that rather than depicting romance, he wanted to include love in a broader sense of his theme of "to save and be saved" and always reaching out a helping hand. Not to include romance for the sake of including romance.

Therefore, even if the show itself ends up confirming a certain couple "canon" with this upcoming OVA, it is not canon to the main story. It never has been. Horikoshi has always very explicitly stated that romance was never the point of MHA even though fans demanded it once Chapter 430 was released.

Even past the point of romance itself, there are many mischaracterizations and retrogrades in Chapter 431 that completely rewind all the progress/purpose made for certain characters and their arcs throughout the entire story. The characters at many points don't even feel like themselves. This further adds to the point of this chapter being taken separately from the main story arc.

Horikoshi has also stated specifically for Chapter 431 in another post that he "turns off the cameras and frees the characters from their dramas." This proves further that what happens beyond Chapter 430 is detached from the main story itself. The cameras are turned off, and the story is no longer filming or being recorded to the main ending. The main finale has already been wrapped up.

The bell rang, signaling the end of another school day at UA High. The corridors were soon filled with the sound of chattering students and the shuffling of feet as everyone made their way out. Izuku Midoriya, now a seasoned hero and a dedicated teacher, walked through the halls with a gentle smile, his eyes occasionally glancing at the groups of students passing by. Despite the many years that had passed, his passion for nurturing the next generation of heroes had only grown.

He made his way to the teachers' lounge, hoping for a moment of peace before tackling the mountain of paperwork awaiting him. As he pushed open the door, he was greeted by the sight of you, sitting on the couch with a stack of assignments in your lap. You taught a different course to the same grade, and your classrooms were right next to each other. Your playful demeanor often lit up the otherwise serious atmosphere of the school.

"Hey, Midoriya!" you called out, waving a hand in greeting. There was a playful glint in your eye as you looked up from your papers.

Izuku's heart skipped a beat at the sight of you. Despite his years of hero work and teaching, he still felt a bit awkward around you. It wasn't just your looks that captivated him but also the way you seemed to effortlessly brighten up any room you entered. He walked over to the coffee machine, trying to act casual as he filled a mug.

"Hi," he replied, his voice steady but with a hint of nervousness that only he could detect. He took a deep breath and turned to face you, leaning against the counter.

You tilted your head slightly, a teasing smile on your lips. "Rough day?"

He chuckled softly, shaking his head. "No, not really. Just the usual end-of-day exhaustion." He paused, glancing at the papers in your lap. "How about you? How's everything going with your class?"

You sighed dramatically, placing a hand on your forehead. "Oh, you know, the kids are great, but this grading is going to be the death of me." There was a sparkle in your eyes as you exaggerated your troubles, and Izuku couldn't help but smile at your theatrics.

He watched you for a moment, admiring the way you managed to find joy even in mundane tasks. He wished he could express how much he admired that about you. Instead, he simply nodded and took a sip of his coffee.

"You always seem to handle it well," he said, his voice soft. "The students really look up to you."

You looked up at him, a genuine smile replacing your playful one. "Thanks, Midoriya. That means a lot coming from you."

He felt a warmth spread through his chest at your words. Despite the countless times you'd had similar exchanges, each one felt special to him. He wanted to say more, to let you know how much he valued your presence, but the words always seemed to get stuck in his throat.

As you returned to your grading, Izuku couldn't help but steal glances at you. Your playful nature, the way you interacted with the students, and your ability to make even the most boring tasks seem fun – all of it drew him to you. He admired you deeply, but he was also aware of the awkwardness that still lingered within him, a remnant of his younger years.

Finishing his coffee, he decided to muster up the courage to speak more openly. "You know, it's really nice having a colleague like you," he began, his voice a bit hesitant. "Someone who can make even the toughest days a little brighter."

You looked up, surprised but pleased. "Thanks, Midoriya. That means a lot."

He nodded, feeling a sense of accomplishment at having expressed a bit of what he felt. As he made his way to the door, he paused and turned back to you. "If you ever need help with grading or anything else, just let me know. I'd be happy to lend a hand."

Your eyes sparkled with that familiar playful glint as you replied, "I'll keep that in mind, Midoriya. Don't be surprised if I take you up on that offer."

He smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes. "I'd like that."

With that, he left the lounge, his heart feeling lighter. He knew it would take time for him to fully open up, but he was willing to wait. After all, you were worth it.

I don’t know if you’ve posted about this before, but what are your thoughts on the ending of mha?

I’ve seen a lot of people criticizing Izuku losing his quirk and giving up on being a hero. Personally, I really like it. Izuku was a teenager, who fought in an honest-to-goodness war, he saw his friend’s corpse (even though he did come back) and likely did lasting damage to his body, not to mention the fact that the fate of the world was literally dependent on him, which is stated several times. That’s a whole lot for a kid to deal with, is it so wrong for him to want a quiet life after all that? (or somewhat quiet, it’s UA, there’s definitely gonna be some chaos) Dreams also change as you grow. Sometimes it’s gradual, sometimes it’s not. That being said, he achieved his dream anyway. Izuku repeatedly says he wants to save people with a smile on his face and that he wants to be a worthy successor to All Might. He did both of those things, and now by teaching he’s helping the next generation, and in turn preventing more people like Shigaraki and Toga from happening. 

Honestly, the only part I dislike is that class A didn’t see each other much after graduation. Like, those trauma bonded little muffins are going to hang out every chance they get, and I will not be convinced otherwise. 

Anyway, I hope this makes sense, it’s really late here and I’m super tired as well as hopped up on caffeine, sugar, and pain meds. Also Izuku keeps auto correcting to ukulele for some reason and it’s absolutely hilarious to my foggy brain.

I absolutely agree with all your points!

As for what I think about the ending, it was perfect - it stayed true to the message of the story in THE most poetic way, and I think a lot of ppl criticise it simply cos it takes a bit more effort to understand and that it wasn't gonna be as easy as Deku keeping OFA and topping the charts straight away just cos he's the main protagonist.

Life is NOT THAT EASY, and I LOVE that Deku didn't have it easy even after the Final War! Just because you save the world, doesn't mean you get automatically granted everything. You are still gonna run into hurdles and have to navigate through the rest of your life cos those are different battles you'll have to fight. Deku has been telling us this whole time that "This is the story of how I became the world's greatest hero" and ppl think he was lying about that just cos he's doesn't become #1 and he lost his power but HE WASN'T LYING!

The "greatest" NEVER meant #1.

It NEVER meant who was the best at beating up bad guys.

It never even meant being at any position in the rankings!

It means, who's made the most impact on the world and remembered for it?

It means, who inspires ppl the most?

It means, who shows a level of kindness and empathy that no one has ever seen?

THAT'S ALL DEKU!!!!!

If we're following MHA's big message of 'anyone can be a hero', it means how can everyday ppl contribute to making this world a better place. Most of them can't fight bad guys, so why should that be the only thing we take into account? THAT'S how we measure the "greatest", and Deku smashes all the marks (pun intended).

Secondly, teaching is THE PERFECT JOB for Deku. Like you said, he's guiding the next generations. He's actively choosing to be a part of their journey to help them achieve their dreams, instead of just flying around with barely any time for even autographs. The fact that Deku made the choice he did is rlly heroic! Plus, settling down like that after saving the world sounds like a pretty fulfilling life to me.

He says "Once your dream comes true, it's your turn to offer dreams to others." This highlights his selflessness. He's not thinking about the glory of combat - he acknowledges that heroism is more than that, and there's more than one way to be a hero. He prioritises helping ppl, and being a teacher is poetically another way he's able to do that. One thing about Deku is that he's always able to find the best of both worlds, and this is that!

He didn't 'return to square one' just cos he's Quirkless again - he's now got all this wisdom and experience that he can use to guide his students! His unique experience of being originally Quirkless and then receiving a Quirk would give him a broader perspective on life and therefore leave an impression on his students, turning them into more accepting and well-rounded individuals. When children are brought up with ideas of empathy and equality, those things proliferate in the world around them, cos they're actively contributing to it!

Letting go of OFA fits into that selflessness as well, but most importantly, it's mentioned repeatedly that OFA's job is to defeat AFO. So OFA served its purpose cos AFO was defeated in the Final War. There's literally no point of it existing if AFO is no more!!!! Why don't ppl realise this????

My view on Deku getting the mech suit and being able to fight again is that it's a physical representation of his good karma. He's accumulated so much of it throughout his life that even 8 yrs later, it hasn't all circled back to him yet. Obviously, Deku is gonna miss being able to fight, but instead of being greedy or dissatisfied and desperately reaching out for anything that could get him that power again, he's remained content with his life. He accepts his life as a teacher and accepts that it may be that way forever, but he never complains. Missing it isn't the same as complaining! I don't think that any other person in his position would've been able to handle losing OFA - they would've tried to find a substitute, another way to be able to engage in physical combat, to be 'strong' again.

But that's not what strength is and Deku knows it. It's strength in itself to let go of the power that allowed you to achieve your dream, and it's also strength to keep going after losing it. I think that Deku's acceptance and ability to detach from the physical power that OFA gave him - which is a material gain - contributed a LOT to that good karma he'd accumulated. That's why he didn't have to go looking for it. In short, his small, deeply hidden wish to be able to fight again was fulfilled cos he EARNED it through his actions.

As for Katsuki, I'm not mad that he's #5 even tho he kept saying he wanted to be #1. I think it highlights his character development in that he's accepted that being #1 isn't the most important thing about being a hero, and that there's so much more to it than just rankings. Of course, there's no problem with him still aiming for #1 - he's a competitive guy, I expect him to - but the fact that he isn't #1 in the end is poetic and stays true to the perspective that MHA gives us on what heroism rlly is. The rankings aren't focused on as much and I love that. Although I wish he was nicer to civilians too... that's the only thing.

And it does suck that 1-A didn't get to spend much time together, but it matches up with the reality of graduating high school - you probs won't get to see many of those ppl much, if at all, cos everyone's gone their separate ways. But it's not like none of them interact! Iida, Tsu, Momo and Ochako were visiting schools together, Aoyama and Hagakure sometimes work as a duo, Ojiro and Sato still hang out, Kaminari and Jiro have their agencies next to each other, etc. But, I headcanon that these guys are wayyy too attached to each other to let that be the case, so I'd like to think that they meet up to hang out as often as they can too 😅

And both of the little ones are baffled wondering how the hell they got to that point of closeness. Like could you even imagine Chapter 1 Izuku discovering that he became a hero while quirkless and Chapter 1 Katsuki seeing how much adult Katsuki cares and is devoted to Izuku?
