i saw this panel and the absolute first thing i thought of was hawks and twice ! we know that twice was a good person, but what made him unable to be saved was the fact that he was motivated to do whatever he could to help his friends . if that meant burning down the whole world, he was going to do that for them .
so hawks tells him to stand down . offers him help in rebuilding his life . he wants to save his friend, a man he knows is good . but twice is resistant and betrayed .
and so hawks makes the decision to sacrifice twice, probably the only friend he’s ever had, to save the lives of others . it’s a huge display of how strong his resolve is; nothing will stand in his way of protecting people . perhaps other people would’ve stood down, unable to strike down someone they knew was good and someone they cared about . but hawks is able to do just that .
we’ve seen hawks’s resolve displayed before that as well ! when dabi wanted hawks to kill best jeanist as proof of his loyalty, hawks makes the decision for jeanist to undergo a risky procedure that will allow him to stay within the villains without having to kill an innocent man .
both nana’s line and hawks’s line using “resolve” is so important . we’ve seen how much it takes for someone to have to sacrifice a villain that the hero wants to save . twice looked like he needed saving, and hawks extended that hand to him . in the end, however, as nana fears with shigaraki, twice could not be saved . because of hawks’s resolve, he could make the choice to take him out for the greater good .
we’ve seen firsthand what could happen with deku and shigaraki through what happened with hawks and twice . we’ve seen what happens when villains just can’t be saved, no matter how much you want them to be . the question now is if deku has a resolve strong enough to make the same decision hawks had to, if need be .
