Plot drop trigger warnings: death, severe injuries, parental death. Scroll to the bottom for a tl;dr version.
As the castle bursted with energy from the cousin’s outrageously large party, something dark lurked outside the castle walls. The students danced with the freedom their parents fought for them to have, completely unaware as to what was to happen. Unfortunately, even after the war there were still those who still followed he-who-must-not-be-named and those followers sought revenge. Those who sought revenge, called themselves the Regency because they believed that since their king, Tom Riddle, had fallen and now it was their job to rule.
There were three targets. Each chosen to convey a specific message. Brier Dursley was chosen to demonstrate what should happen to blood traitors. Especially those whose bloodline was already tainted, so much so that she’d had produced a squib. Her death was horrific, but that was mostly because she put up a fight— determined to protect her family. Which she succeeded in doing, even if it meant losing her life. Dudley and Ivy remained safe, but they feared what might happen next. They marked the scene with a “G” as a nod towards the man who started it all, Grindelwald. The attackers left before her family could even assess the situation. For what felt like the first time, Dudley felt like he knew how Harry felt as he cradled his wife in his arms.
Andromeda Black was nothing more than a blood traitor. She’d tainted her bloodline with the likes of Ted Tonks and he managed to erase any ounce of respect her maiden name gave her. What made it worse was that she raised the first child born during the war, a half-breed. The attackers assumed that the attack would be easy… after all she was older. Though, they must have forgotten who raised her. Mrs. Andromeda Tonks fought until her last breath. The assailants left bruised and battered, but unlike their victim they got to walk away. To top things off they even took her wand as a souvenir. They marked this scene with a “V”, an obvious nod to Voldemort himself.
The last attack didn’t go as well as they planned. Neville Longbottom, born just one day before the boy-who-lived, destroyed one of Voldemort’s final horcruxes. Killing him was mostly a passion project for the group. They’d planned the final attack for months… only for Neville to out smart them. They should have known that he’d be hard to kill, but at least they left a lasting impression. Neville Longbottom, although alive, now suffered from severe burns on his left torso. In the midst of these burns, an “R” mockingly shows through his scars. R for revenge.
The children didn’t find out until the next morning and only after Professor Mcgonagall woefully informed Teddy, Winnie, Hazel and Holly of the attacks. The rest of the students learned from the Daily Profit or from letters from their parents. Suddenly it felt like everything that was fought for started to crumble at their feet. The castle would protect them, yes… but what about their families?
tl;dr
A death eater inspired group set out three attacks on three separate witches and wizards. Those attacked were Brier Dudley, Andromeda Tonks, and Neville Longbottom. Longbottom was the only survivor. The students found out the morning after the party.
