The soul falls off this guy like silk. It’s sickening for a fellow vocalist to hear him dance over those notes like a prima ballerina. Personally, I am a huge soul fan so this guy is not just up my street but he’s bought the vast majority of it. Vocals with an air of Luther and Stevie and backing that could have been pulled straight out of a Nutini album, Mi’das builds emotions in a cold hearted city girl that resemble sky scrapers. The solo just past the middle of the song has a touch of John Mayer to it, with a blues outer and an oozing soulful centre.
Being a vocalist and a writer I am cursed with LLS (lyric snob syndrome), but I have to say I feel these words fit the bill. The driving drum beat keeps the intonation in his words highlighted enough to feel his emotion. Now i’m not saying he’s perfect, about 30% diction away if i’m honest. But, this is definitely a song I can happily listen to on repeat.
The backing is so elegant and frames the bones of the piece like a million dollar painting. The brass is such a beautiful surprise, as is the twinkling piano and striking strings. The chorus is so catchy I have caught myself humming it to my commute to work (which is always a good sign in my books).
I feel there could be a Mi’das shaped gap in the market right now, a guy that isn’t just throwing out a record for the sake of. You can feel from the gumption in his melodies that he cares tremendously about his message to the public and the sooner a guy like this takes over the fakery and bravado in the current mainstream the better.
