This last weekend .UNO arrived in Miami, Florida, for the annual Carnaval Miami, one of the largest Hispanic festivals in the country. We ate delicious fish tacos and Peruvian ceviche, even had some amazing mojitos, but we spent the majority of our time doing what we love, talking to people about .UNO.

For those of you that follow us, you may have noticed a social media explosion as we made hundreds, if not thousands, of tweets, Facebook posts and Instragram photos on the event. Our apologies if that was a bit overwhelming, but you’ll have to excuse our excitement, after all, these Carnaval-goers happen to be our primary target consumers—Spanish-speakers who will one day be using .UNO sites on a daily basis to find information and their favorite websites in Spanish.

As someone who’s bilingual, I made an interesting observation during the Carnaval. I saw a surprising difference in the reactions of English-speakers versus Spanish-Speakers after giving the basic .UNO “elevator pitch”.

After explaining the general concept of .UNO, I noticed the English-speakers typically gave me a sideways-glance followed by a gentle nod of agreement, as in “oh, ok. I get it.” As English-speakers, it’s obvious they’ve never given much thought to what the Internet might be like for others—after all it's been dominated by English since its conception.

But it was the Spanish-speakers who had by fare the most enthusiastic response, typically saying things like “it’s about time” or “this sounds amazing.” When I told them .UNO would do away with those tiny en Español buttons, that they could quickly and easily find all their favorite sites in Spanish, there were a lot of raised eyebrows, smiles and enthusiastic nodding. All signs that not only are Spanish-speakers ready for .UNO, they’ve been expecting it for sometime now.

For the Spanish-speaking world, some 490 million people who spend their days navigating an Internet that was not intended for them, .UNO makes as much sense as wings on an airplane, and after Carnaval Miami, .UNO is ready for take off. On March 19th .UNO domains will be available to the general public and we’re excited. As more .UNO sites are created, the Internet will be transformed into a truly global resource for millions of users.
