By the time Belle closed the library, like she did every night at 9 sharp, it was dark outside. She shivered as she locked the doors, wishing she had thought to bring a jacket or something with her to work that morning. After ten years in Maine, she thought she would've gotten use to the constant chill.
Rubbing her arms, Belle set off down Main Street, hoping to get to her apartment above the flower shop as quick as she could. Maybe make herself a warm cup of tea, and settle into her couch with a good book,and-
A crash, like clanging bottles and wood snapping under a heavy weight breaks through her thoughts, making Belle jump.
For a moment, she stared into the dark alley wedged between Granny's diner and the long line of stores lined up along Main Street, but the night was slight once more, the only noise the chatter that from inside the diner.
It must've just been the cat, Belle thought to herself, remembering the little black cat that hung around Granny's, looking for scraps.
Shaking her head, Belle continued on her way home.
If she was walking a little faster, she didn't think about it.
The flower shop was around just the corner, when another resounding crash broke the silence of the night. But not a crash like before, with only wood and glass; no, this was the sound of a body hitting the ground, followed by the high pitched whine of electricity. Frozen where she stood, Belle turned her head and stared out into the dark street.
When heavy footfalls got louder and heavier, Belle rushed around the corner separating her from her apartment, staying close to the shadows.
The face that greeted her, out of the shadows, was covered with green scales with big, bulbous black eyes, and green tentacles where the mouth should have been.
Belle struggled to breath, her heart leaping into her throat.
A heavy hand clutched her shoulder, and Belle screamed, her arms swinging about her.
"Excuse me, miss, but if you could just look at the light." The voice, heavy with a Scottish accent and calm despite the creature with tentacles on it's face not even three feet from where she stood was enough to distract Belle for the moment, and she looked at the light, a tiny red dot in the night.
Suddenly, there was a great white flash, and everything was black.
