Portland Stabbing Victim Calls Out City's 'White Savior Complex'

Portland stabbing survivor Micah Fletcher is calling for supporters to focus their attention on the girls racially and religiously attacked during Friday’s train attack.

Fletcher thanked supporters for an outpouring of kindness and money in a moving video he posted to Facebook Wednesday, but then he said there’s a problem that needs addressing.

“We need to remember that this is about those little girls. I want you to imagine that for a second being a little girl on that MAX,” Fletcher said. “This man is screaming at you. His face is a pile of knives. His body is a gun. Everything about him is cocked, loaded and ready to kill you,” he continued. “There is a history here with this. You can feel that this has happened before, and the only thing that was different was the names and faces. And then a stranger, two strangers, three strangers come to your aid. They try to help you. And that pile of knives just throws itself at them. Kills them.”

“We in Portland have this weird tendency to continue patterns that we’ve done forever and one of them is same old just to put it bluntly: white savior complex,” Fletcher said in the video. “I think it’s immensely immensely morally wrong and irresponsible how much money we have gotten as opposed to how much support, money, love, kindness that has been given to that little girl.”

Micah and I went to high school together. We sat together at lunch, and performed together in plays, and when my dad died my sophmore year, he helped me through it. When I found out it was him that has been stabbed in the max protecting those girls, it was surreal. On the one hand, it's so hard to think of someone you care about in danger, let alone in the center of an international news story. On the other, though, I couldn't help but thinking "of course he would do that." Of course he would risk his life for strangers, of course he would come out the next day calling the city to stand together, of course he would call out the hypocritcal reaction to his injury for what it is. Micah has always been that kind of person, and I'm so proud to know him. But it's also important to remember, for all the people who want to support him, that he's a human being, that just went through a horrible experience and needs some space to heal. Most people know that he's a brilliant poet, and can say really beautiful things, so the media has been doing everything it can to push him into something quotable, to make him some symbol of heroism, to ignore the fact that he's suffering and needs time out of the spotlight to recover. He's right, we do have a white savior complex, and instead of supporting those terrified teenage girls, we are focusing all our attention on the charming white boy who protected them. And the only people that helps is ourselves.

Destinee Magnum, 17, was riding a MAX train last week with a Muslim friend when the two were attacked by Jeremy Christian.

Micah Fletcher, 21, was one of three men who stepped in and protected the two girls from the racist knifeman. The other two, Rick Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, died from their injuries.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Magnum's mother Dyjuana Hudson posted pictures of her daughter reuniting with Fletcher.

Congratulations to Micah Fletcher on his seat in his neighborhood board!!!

For those of you who don't know, Micah was a friend of mine from high school that briefly became a national celebrity after being stabbed in the neck defending two girls from a white supremacist. He's doing a lot better, and decided to run for local office in order to make a difference.

I'm just really proud of him, and I want everyone who follows me to know how amazing he is!
