And His Lips On Your Cheek
Chapter 11
I can feel my breathing get faster. Like really fast. I can hear the guys voices outside the bunk, Michael was explaining to them why the door was locked. Obviously he didn’t tell them the truth, he just used a lie to cover it up.
"Sorry, I didn’t know I locked the door on the way in." He said.
The band made mumbled complaints and asked him why he took so long to open the door.
"I passed out on the couch and the knocking woke me up, I didn’t know how long you were out there. My bad." He said.
The band mumbled stuff again.
"Guys I really need to take a shower." He exclaimed.
I heard his footsteps get quieter by the step. My breathing didn’t slow down one bit, if anything it might’ve gotten faster. I think this is what hyperventilating is. I’ve heard people get that when they’re really scared. But I wouldn’t say I’m feeling scared, I’m feeling a little worried and paranoid but that’s because of the constant lying to the band. It’s not like I’ve never lied before, I’ve never had breathing problems like this though.
I covered my mouth with my hand to keep me quiet. If I get too loud the boys will find me almost nude in Michael’s bunk and how are we gonna explain that? I can’t blame that on my intoxication.
I felt a little weak now, and a little light headed too. I scratched at the sheets on the bed as an attempt to distract myself. My eyes were watering now. It would be impossible not to hear my struggled breath if you were in the bunk area. God damn why is it so hard to calm down! An achy feeling flowed taking my ribs because of my heavy breathing.
Finally, Michael came into the bunk after what seem like an eternity of waiting.
"What’s wrong? Are you okay?" He whispered.
I shook my head.
"What’s going on?" He asked.
I reached up and covered his mouth with my free hand which was a little shaky. Every word he said, every sound I heard just seemed to make it worse.
"What should I do?" He whispered slowly.
"Shhh!" I managed out.
I could see him conflicting with his thoughts on what to do. He slid his hands under my back and pulled me into him. I buried my face in his shoulder, making sure I covered my mouth. I was trembling now. He combed my hair with his fingers.
"It’s gonna be okay." He whispered over and over.
Surprisingly, I felt my breathing slow down. I was still shaking when he let me go. He quickly took of his shirt and put it on me.
"I’m not cold," I whispered, "but thanks."
"Shh, don’t talk til you feel better." He whispered.
He sat me up and moved behind me. He laid down on his back and pulled me between his legs.
"Lay down." He whispered.
I obliged, so I’m now laying face up on his chest with my waist-down rested between his legs.
"What’s wrong with me?" I asked.
I’m still a bit shaky. My eyelashes are still damp. Michael has his arms around my waist with his hands interlocked on my stomach.
"There’s nothing wrong with you." He whispered.
"Then what was that?" I asked.
"Are you worried at all?" He asked.
"Um yeah, but what does that have to do with my hyperventilating?" I asked.
"I bet you’re feeling paranoid the guys will find out huh?" He whispered.
"Duh, but what does that have to do with my question?" I asked.
"We’ll talk about it in the morning," he whispered, "Just try to get some sleep."
"I’m not tired." I whispered, "not after that."
"Well what do you want to do?" He asked.
"I don’t know," I said, "What can we do, we’re trapped in your bunk."
We both thought for a second.
"What are we?" I asked.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"Us. What are we?" I said.
"Oh." He said, "We’re not gonna get into that right now."
"Why not? It’s been a week." I said.
"Because we don’t need you worried about something else. We’ll talk about it another time. We can talk about anything but that." He said.
"But Michael, I want to know what we are." I said.
He sighed, “We’re not talking about this right now.”
"I think we are." I said.
"We’re not. I’m ending this conversation." He said, "Are you cold at all?"
I didn’t reply.
"Kris, don’t do this. I don’t like it when you’re mad at me." He said.
"I’m not mad." I said.
He hugged my waist tighter, “You sure sound mad. Please don’t be mad.”
I placed my hands on top of his, “I promise I’m not mad.”
"Okay." He said.
We stayed quiet for bit.
"How much weight did you lose?" He asked.
"Like 15 pounds." I said.
He buried his head in my neck, “I’m so fucking stupid.”
"You’re not. Why do you think that?" I asked.
"Because I didn’t notice a thing." He said, "I thought you didn’t lose much at all."
"You didn’t notice because I didn’t tell you. It’s my fault not yours." I said.
"I still feel guilty." He said.
"Don’t be. I’m the only person who should feel guilty about that."
He sighed, “Don’t do it again, ever.”
"I won’t." I said.
"You have to promise." He said.
"Hey." I said and looked him in the eyes, "I promise I won’t do something stupid like that again."
"Thank you." He said.
He made a quick glance at my lips and chewed his inner cheek. He leaned in a gave me a kiss. The kiss was quick but sweet and gave me butterflies in my stomach.
"I don’t think I’ve ever liked the sight of a girl wearing my shirt so much." He said, "You look so good in my t-shirt."
I giggled, “It’s comfy. I think I might keep it.”
"You can keep it, but you can only wear it like this, and only around me." He said and smiled.
"Deal." I said.
We fell asleep together after talking for a bit. When I woke up he was gone and we were in a new city. I snuck out of Michael’s bunk and to my bag to grab some pants.
"You don’t need to rush." Someone said, "Everybody went to some restaurant for breakfast."
I immediately pulled down the shirt to cover my underwear.
"Relax," he chuckled, "It’s just me." He said.
I realized it was Michael and released the shirt.
"You scared the shit out of me!" I shouted.
He mumbled a yeah and walked behind me.
"So um, last night…" He said.
I looked back at him, “Oh God, you don’t regret it do you?”
"No, no!" He said, "Last night was amazing, I wouldn’t change anything. Well, it would’ve been better if the guys didn’t interrupt."
"Ok good." I said.
"I meant when I came back from my shower." He said.
"Oh."
"I called your mom about it." He said.
"What, why?! You know I don’t like it when you, or anyone in that matter, talks to my mom about me!" I shouted.
"Easy, easy Kris." He said, "Let me explain."
I simultaneously leaned back on one leg and crossed my arms at him.
"Go ahead." I said.
"I just wanted to ask some questions."
"Bullshit." I said, "You think I’m crazy don’t you?"
"Don’t fucking say that. Don’t even fucking think that. Don’t put words into my mouth." He said.
"Well then why are you looking at me like that?" I asked.
"Looking at you like what?" He said.
"Your eyes, they’re looking at me differently, not normally." I took at deep breath, "You think I’m weak. Because of my little accident, you think I’m weak, that’s why you called my mom. Isn’t it?"
"No!" He shouted, "I care about you. Just ‘cause we mess around a lot doesn’t mean I don’t care about you. You’re still my best friend. I called your mom because I wanted to ask her some questions, like if that has ever happened before."
"It hasn’t." I said.
"That’s what she told me, but she did tell me something you’ve never trusted me enough to tell me yourself." He said.
"I tell you everything! You know that!" I said.
"Oh yeah?" He said.
"Yes!" I said irritated.
"You’re lying." He said.
I was pissed now, “I am not!”
He got in my face and yelled, “Then why haven’t you told me that anxiety runs in your family?! Huh? Is it ‘cause you don’t trust me enough?! Explain why the fuck you haven’t told me that!”
