-FLUFFY FEELS EXPLOSION-
The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was white.
Dainty, white flakes floating gently outside my window. The tree that stood in front of the opening was beginning to hold little piles of snow here and there on its bare branches. The sky was the perfect shade of light gray, casting an ethereal glow across my room as the morning sun shone in. A slow smile crept up on my face as I rose from the comfy, warm sheets that adorned my bed.
I shuffled to the window, rubbing the sleep from my eyes before I peered out at the silent fields of my small farm. The ground was cloaked in pretty, powder-like snow, it covered every surface as far as the eye could see. The sight of it sent jolts of excitement through me and I quickly rushed to get ready for the day. I showered and dressed in my favorite jeans and long sleeve shirt with a thick snow jacket. Skipping into my kitchen, I switched on my Keurig and pulled out my phone to open my contacts. With a mischievous grin, I put the phone up to my ear just as the first ring rang. On the third ring, the other line picked up and my stomach fluttered with butterflies.
“Y/N...is there a reason you’re calling me at such an early hour?” the groggy voice of my best friend droned from the other end. “I need my beauty sleep.” I glanced at the clock on the microwave and saw that it was a quarter past six.
I rolled my eyes as my grin grew wider. “Listen Tyler, I don’t know how to tell you this but, I don’t think sleep is gonna help your ‘beauty’.” I replied, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Low blow, man, I thought we were friends. I’m so hurt,” He scoffed playfully and I heard rustling, his voice a little muffled as he moved around. “But really, did you just call to insult your poor, sleep-deprived best friend?”
“No, of course not just to insult you.” The teasing in my voice was evident. “Actually, I woke up this morning to a pretty great and white surprise.”
The other end went silent for a good while and I became a little concerned that he had fallen asleep until I heard a small sigh.
“This isn’t one of your sick, dirty jokes, is it?” His words made me burst out laughing and I shook my head, leaning against the counter that had a window overlooking my front yard above it.
“No! As in white I mean snow, you ninny. There’s snow on the ground, you down to come over and roll around in the powder with me?” In all honesty, I wanted him to say yes and come over. See, I had developed a crush on my best friend over the many years we’d been friends. But in recent years, it had upgraded from a crush to me having serious feelings for him that weren’t friendship worthy. Of course, I would never tell him that since fear of rejection was looming over the subject like a dangerous predator ready to go in for the kill.
He groaned dramatically, whining a little when his answer came out. “Do I have to? It’s so cold and mushy!” he drew out ‘cold’ and ’mushy’ in a childish whine, making me roll my eyes again.
“Oh, come on you big baby, it won’t be that bad at all and plus, I haven’t seen you in two weeks since you got back from tour.” I begged, trying to put on my best sad act. Tyler’s end was filled with sighs and groans until finally I heard him release a loud, exasperated grumble.
“Ugh, alright, fine! I’ll be there in half an hour. But you’re feeding me, because I’m starving.” With that, I happily agreed and the line went dead.
Without missing a beat, I got to making breakfast, hurrying around my kitchen with little to no grace. A couple times I had to quickly hop, barely missing my cat, Spirit, as he weaved through my legs. Soon, I had the table set with bacon, eggs, and some of my homemade pumpkin bread that most definitely was Tyler’s favorite during the holidays.
I just filled my Avengers themed mug with cocoa when I heard a knock on the door. With my mug still in hand, I rushed to the door and cracked it open, peeking outside to see tuffs of dirty blond hair sticking out from under a maroon beanie.
A sly grin tugged at the corner of my lips. “What’s the password?”
His clear blue eyes rolled before fixing on me and narrowing slightly. “Y/N, come on. Let me in before I freeze my ass off out here.”
“Damn, you suck at passwords,” I swung the door open and he hurried inside, stomping on the doormat to rid his boots of any leftover slush. I stood on the side, arms crossed carefully so the hot chocolate didn’t spill, and watched him silently. When he turned to me, I quickly slipped on a playful smile and raised an eyebrow. “Well? Hello to you, too.”
Tyler let out a laugh and stepped forward to wrap me up in a hug. But just as his arms came around me he pulled back and took my mug, winking as he spun around and headed toward the kitchen, humming a quick thanks.
“Hey!”
“’Hay’ is for horses,” he quickly threw back as he sat down, a huge grin spread on his face. His eyes glanced to the table and widened instantly. “Is that pumpkin bread?!” Rolling my eyes at his excited face, I sighed but couldn’t help the smile the came across my own face and went to make another cup, sitting down soon after.
“So, how was tour? You never got to tell me much about it.” I asked excitedly as we both dug into the breakfast, taking a small moment to sigh in delight at how yummy the food tasted. After a few mouthfuls, he began telling me about the adventures of the band’s travels. All the time we were talking, Tyler had me laughing at the ridiculous pranks they had pulled while on the road and it had me sort of jealous that I would probably never get to go with him. The sad thought caused my smile to falter slightly but I quickly brushed it away, not wanting to worry Tyler. We soon finished our meal, stuffed to the brim and smiling contently, but I wasn’t ready to end the day just yet.
With surprising agility, I jumped from my seat and rushed over to pull Tyler from his. “Come on, come on! We still need to go outside in the snow!”
“W-Wait! Y/N-” He didn’t even have a chance to protest as I dragged him out the door by his dark gray scarf and onto the frozen porch steps. Since it was the first snow of the year, there wasn’t much but just enough to still have some fun.
Sparing no moment of hesitation, I jumped down into the snow and let out a squeal when my bare hands touched the freezing ground. The cold hurt a little but I didn’t mind one bit as I laughed and rolled over to lay on the white snow. I looked back at the house only to see Tyler disappear through the door. I was about to call out to him but he reappeared a moment later, looking oddly concerned as he hurried toward me. Sitting up, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion at his sudden change in demeanor.
“Tyler? What’s wrong?” My voice trailed off as my eyes glanced down to see a pair of my gloves in his hands when he knelt down in front of me.
“You’re gonna get seriously sick in this weather if you come out here without gloves,” His voice was stern, the usually subtle southern accent sounding thicker with his concern. He picked up my hands with his free hand and exhaled a quick breath, my eyes drawn to his lips as they pursed in disapproval. “Jesus, Y/N...your hands are already turning blue. Here.”
Gently, he carefully and slowly slipped the gloves onto my frozen fingers, wrapping them in his grip afterward and held them up to his lips as he tried to warm them.
All I could do was stare dumbfoundedly with my mouth hanging open at the man in front of me. My mind was in a jumble with what was happening and I couldn’t gather myself.
In his hurry to get to me, the red beanie had slipped off his head and dark blond strands of his hair ruffled in the wind. I unconsciously wiggled my fingers as feeling came back into them and he looked at me.
Right at that moment, the sun decided to come out and adorn us in light, causing the irises of his eyes to shine a breathtaking color of blue-green. The color caused my heart to skip a beat and speed up even more than it already was. All I could do was stare up into his eyes and I suddenly felt dizzy.
Those beautiful eyes trained on me and narrowed in concern. “Breathe, Y/N.” A voice murmured softly, breaking me from my trance and I sucked in a deep breath. During the shock of his closeness, I must’ve forgotten how to breathe...but honestly, I didn’t care.
I shook my head, clearing the thoughts from my mind and blinked up at Tyler. “Sorry...um, thanks for my gloves,” I let out a small, nervous laugh and looked away, but I could’ve swore I saw his eyes glance to my mouth. “I totally forgot about them with me being excited and all...” A blush burned my cheeks; I was babbling and needed to stop, but I didn’t know how.
A soft chuckle drifted in the wind and my gaze shot up to his face. His eyes were soft and held something in them that made my breath catch; there was a tenderness in them that I had always wished to be shown toward me but never imagined it’d come true. Slowly, he released one of my hands and reached up to brush my cheek, causing them to burn more with blush.
“I always thought you looked even more beautiful when you blushed...” he whispered before blinking in surprise and moved back to stand up. Shock was the only thing racing through my mind at this point. “Um, here come on, let's get you inside and out of the cold.”
“O-Oh...” I breathed as he pulled me up. As soon as I was standing, he dropped my hands and turned away to head toward the house. The warmth from my hands faded away along with the warmth that began to stir in my chest.
I followed Tyler into the house and shuffled to the living room where I sat down on the couch, fidgeting with my gloves. What was all of that about out there? Was what I saw just my imagination or did it actually look like he cared for me like I was more than a friend? My mind kept racing and I could hear him moving around in the other room, until I saw him appear around the corner with my mug in hand. He came over and handed me the cup before turning his attention to the fireplace across the room. Tyler quickly got a fire going, spread out a blanket on the floor, and sat down; he turned to me with a small but mischievous smile and beckoned me to him.
Blinking at him in surprise, I walked to him and sat down, sighing in relief as the warmth of the fire washed over me. My eyes watched the flames of the fire dance along the wood for what seemed like hours until Tyler broke the silence.
“Are you warm enough?” His voice was soft and genuine, and it warmed me up faster than the fire as I nodded, looking up at him.
“Yeah, I’m toasty now. Thank you, ya know, for the gloves and the hot chocolate,” I replied, swishing around the steaming liquid in my mug.
He smiled, gazing down at the mug and a small laugh slipped from behind his lips. “Man, I can’t believe you actually liked that cup when I gave it to you.”
Lifting the mug, I chuckled at the memory a couple years back when he bought it for me as a last minute gift for my birthday. The look of guilt on his face flashed through my mind and I laughed out loud.
“You were so nervous that I wouldn’t like it, too! Good thing I was in love with the movie. But I would’ve accepted any gift from you, really.” As the words left my mouth, a blush spread on my cheeks and I turned my head away slightly.
A soft sigh escaped him as he spoke. “That’s what I love about you...always giving so much but never expecting a lot in return. You’re so genuine, it’s amazing, Y/N.”
His words caused me to look back at him with surprise. He could just be saying that in a friend way...right? “I...I mean, I try to be a good person..”
He shook his head, a blissful smile spreading on his face while he stared at the fire, his eyes flashing from the green flecks. “You don’t really have to try, though, Y/N. It’s like...like you’re naturally just amazing and nice and helpful and beautiful, and just all of everything. I just...what I’m trying to say...” Tyler stumbled over his words and furrowed his eyebrows as if trying to think of the right things to say.
What he was saying seemed to kickstart my heart and I bit my lip to suppress my grin. “Yes?”
A sigh left him and then a groan, before he finally sucked in a deep breath and turned to me, determination ablaze in his eyes.
“Y/N...I know I haven’t really shown it..and I know this might be surprising and you probably don’t feel the same way I do, but...I really like being with you. I have for the past 10 years and I never realized my true feelings until a while ago. I...I didn’t know how you would react so I never confessed to you. But today...” His cheeks turned a little red as his smile widened. “Today I felt like I should open up to you and not hide my feelings. And I...god, Y/N, I am so in love with you and your weird but adorable obsession with Avengers.”
My vision became a bit blurry as tears unexpectedly welled up in my eyes and I quickly wiped them away before they fell. I set the cup down before running a hand through my hair. As cliche as it sounded, my heart was bursting with excitement and joy and just every emotion there was when the man you were in love with confessed that he loved you, too.
“I...” My voice cracked and I burst out laughing as I laid a hand on his, squeezing. “Do you know how fucking long I’ve waited for you to tell me that?”
Tyler’s expression was priceless, going from confusion to shock in a matter of seconds. “What..you...you feel the same?! When the fuck were you gonna tell me?”
“Whenever the fuck you were gonna tell me!” I threw back, grinning as I laughed at his surprised face. I leaned forward, not being able to take it any longer, and wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed a kiss to his cheek, drawing out a surprised grunt from him. “I’m really glad you love my Avengers obsession.” I whispered with a smile. “I’m so in love with you and your amazingly-super-mutant-Mariah-Carey voice.”
His arms wrapped around me, holding me so close I could feel him softly shake with silent laughter. “I’m glad you love that, too.” I felt warm lips press against my forehead and melted even more into his arms. We stayed by the fire a little longer before finally getting up to have another go at playing in the snow. The rest of the day was filled with happiness and a shitload of snow shoved in our faces.
hope this makes you smile :)
