it was almost two o’clock in the morning, and cho thought it’d be a wise idea to pay the peaky cauldron a visit. it seemed like a much better plan, in comparison to the tossing and turning she had been doing all night, before concluding that sleep just wasn’t going to happen for her tonight. she had spent about twenty minutes walking around her neighbourhood, before apparating into diagon alley, now finding herself sitting in a quiet corner booth inside the leaky cauldron. feeling a set of eyes on her, she adverted her gaze and lifted a hand for a wave as she saw michael. one that retracted just as soon as it had shot up. “ are you following me? ” she tried to joke. what a pathetic excuse for an opener, she thought. especially since it was cho that found michael first during their last interaction. “ it was this, or some muggle fast food chain. which smelled mostly of burnt toast. ” she added, through a dry chuckle. cho gestured a hand towards the empty seat across from her, offering, if he was to stay. “ what’s your excuse for staying up this late? ”

“ you really think that far ahead? ” you really believe that we will make it that far? was her alternative question, but decided to keep the latter to herself. are you sure you won’t be sick of me by then? was another one that she had considered asking. avoiding his question all together and instead covered it with a question of her own hadn’t been intentional. the tone in her voice remained light — a little surprised, that was a given with the weight of a question like that — but still very much hopeful to know she wasn’t alone in thinking it. “ it doesn’t scare you? ”

“ don’t worry, the chances of that happening are quite slim. ” cho started, breath permeating through the back of her throat in light amusement at his concern, face turning warm. she was on her way to quidditch practice though not before grabbing something to eat with michael after running into him at diagon alley. unprompted and unplanned, which is what seemed to be their style lately. “ but i’ll promise to keep in touch. ”

“We’ve been friends for years, of course we’re close. The only thing there is friendship and his contempt for my occupation. I don’t think he’s ever going to come around– fuck. But he’s too good of a friend to give up on me and it irks me that he thinks I need saving.”
